2019-08-27Ombudswoman informs the public about alleged illegal police treatment of migrants
Since there has been no reaction so far to the Croatian Ombudswoman’s letter to the competent institutions (to State’s Attorney Office, Speaker of the Croatian Parliament, Chairpersons of the Committee on the Constitution, Standing Orders and Political System, the Committee on Human and National Minority Rights and the Domestic Policy and National Security Committee) regarding her request to conduct appropriate, efficient and independent investigation of the alleged illegal police treatment of migrants, which was received in a complaint by an anonymous policeman, in order to establish whether it was grounded, Croatian Ombudswoman Lora Vidović has now informed the public as the last resort stipulated by the Art 19 of the Ombudsman Law.

Le Médiateur de la République pris part au séminaire sur la gestion des crises
Un séminaire sur la gestion des crises: quel rôle pour le Médiateur ou Ombudsman s’est tenu au Grand Duché de Luxembourg, le 24 octobre 2023. Le séminaire organisé par l’AOMF a réuni les Médiateurs et Ombudsmans de la Francophonie. Cette rencontre a permis des échanges enrichissants sur le rôle essentiel joué par ces institutions dans la gestion des crises sanitaires, climatiques et sociales, ainsi que dans la protection des droits fondamentaux.

Hungarian Ombudsman Ákos Kozma visits the Austrian Ombudsman Board
On Monday, 30 October 2023, Ombudsperson Gaby Schwarz welcomed the Hungarian Ombudsman Ákos Kozma at the Austrian Ombudsman Board. During the work meeting, they agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation. Similar to the Austrian Ombudsman Board, the Hungarian institution also functions as a National Human Rights Institution and a National Preventive Mechanism.

Ombudsman urges improvements in how trees are protected in Northern Ireland’s planning system
A report published by the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) into how trees are protected has found that despite 369 tree protection breaches reported between 2019 and 2022, only one resulted in enforcement action being taken, and none led to prosecution. The report also found there was a lack of clear information for the public on Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), and that information about which trees are protected should be made more accessible.

Peer review of the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman was held in Coventry
A peer review of the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman (UK) was held in Coventry (UK), in November 2023, by a specially designated panel led by the Ombudsman of Greece and IOI Regional President (Europe) Andreas Pottakis. Former Ombudsman of Ireland and former President of the IOI, Peter Tyndall, Professor of socio-legal studies at the University of Glasgow, Chris Gill, and Kersten England, former Chief Executive of Bradford City Council and of York City Council, were the other three members of the peer review panel.
