On 13 January 2020, Human Rights Ombudsman Peter Svetina hosted a working visit from Werner Amon, Secretary General of the IOI and Chair of the Austrian Ombudsman Board. Amon and his Slovenian counterpart exchanged the experiences of their respective national institutions dedicated to human rights and called for even greater cooperation between ombudsmen in Europe.

On January 13, 2020, Ombudsman Paul Dubé announced in a press release that Ms. Kelly Burke had just joined his office as Ontario’s new French Language Services Commissioner and Deputy Ombudsman. Ms. Burke was chosen by Mr. Dubé and an expert panel in a nationwide search.

According to Deputy-Ombudsman Mikko Sarja, the equal right of children in prisons to free basic education must be safeguarded, and completing compulsory education must be possible for them. Their imprisonment does not limit these rights. The importance of this issue is underlined by the fact that underage remand prisoners and children who are serving a prison sentence are a very vulnerable group of children.

Le BOV recommande au ministre des Anciens Combattants de mettre en place un programme de soutien par les pairs financé qui répond aux besoins des vétérans qui ont subi un TSM.

The Ombudsman of Sint Maarten, Ms. Gwendolien Mossel, recently attended the Caribbean and Latin American Regional Board of Directors meeting of the International Ombudsman Institute, which was held from March 11-14, 2024 in Mexico City. Among other, a primary topic was the migratory wave in the region. The Catalan deputy for the defence of children's and adolescents' rights, Aida C. Rodríguez, has been elected president-elect of the European Network of Ombudspersons for Children (ENOC) for the 2025/2026 term. The election and assumption of office took place during the 29th General Assembly in Bucharest, Romania. Next year, the deputy will assume the presidency of the Bureau and Catalonia will organise and host the 30th ENOC General Assembly.

2020-01-08Ombudsman finds that rights of incapacitated individuals are still unduly restricted
A recent study by the Seimas Ombudsmen revealed that after the ongoing review of the incapacity of individuals, there are still more than 1,600 incapacitated individuals in the country, whose rights have so far been unduly restricted. These particularly puzzling findings were presented by the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office in a report.
