The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI), part of the Office of the Ombudsman of Samoa, has completed its public inquiry into family violence, its first national inquiry. Headed by Samoan Ombudsman Maiava Iulai Toma, the inquiry commissioners began work on the report in late 2016, and it was publicly released in September 2018.

New Study addresses access to sport for people with disabilities
The Commission has published a study that seeks to promote best practice for providing enhanced opportunities for individuals with disabilities to be involved in organised sports.There are an estimated 80m people with a disability in the European Union (EU), equivalent to approximately 15% of the EU population. Disabled people are less likely to take part in organised sport than non-disabled individuals, this despite the many positive benefits of participation.

Poldershops on data protection and communication

Victorians lodged more than 800 complaints about VicRoads with the Victorian Ombudsman last financial year, with many of the issues having serious financial, practical and emotional consequences for those involved.

Ombudsman warns government of increasing complaints concerning delays in pension payments
The Portuguese Ombudsman, Maria Lúcia Amaral, wrote once more to the Minister of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security informing about the worrying situation experienced by many citizens who are facing significant delays in their pension payments and demands measures to combat these persistent delays.

IOI President appears before UK Parliamentary Committee
On Tuesday 8 January IOI President and Irish Ombudsman Peter Tyndall appeared before the UK Parliament’s Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee. Mr Tyndall was giving his observations on the performance of the UK Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. This followed a peer review of the PHSO which Mr Tyndall chaired with Caroline Mitchell (Lead Ombudsman Financial Ombudsman Service) and Chris Gill (lecturer, University of Glasgow).

Europe Conference and General Assembly held in Brussels
The European Region of the IOI held its quadrennial Conference and General Assembly in Brussels from 1 – 3 October 2018. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the event was hosted by the Federal Ombudsman of Belgium, Catherine De Bruecker and Guido Herman, and their office.
