40th Anniversary celebrations start with side event at UN headquarters in New York
On 30 April 2018 the IOI organized a side event at the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York to mark the 40th anniversary of its establishment in 1978. The event provided a platform for exchange between the United Nations and the Ombudsman community, as well as the perfect setting for the launch of the IOI’s most recent publication on “A Mission to Justice – The International Ombudsman Institute 1978-2018”.

Memorandum of Understanding between General Inspection Organization and Anti-Corruption Directorate of Azerbaijan
The General Inspection Organization (the GIO) of Islamic Republic of Iran hosted Deputy Prosecutor General of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Director of the Anti-corruption Directorate with the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Azerbaijan during June 17 - 21, 2018. Both organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding to boost cooperation in the fields of complaint management and anti-corruption activities.

Mandate of Human Rights Defender expanded significantly following constitutional amendments
Under the new Constitution of 2015 the mandate of the Human Rights Defender (HRD) has been expanded by including the power to facilitate the improvement of the regulatory legal acts related to human rights and freedoms. Following the Constitutional Amendments, a new Constitutional Law on Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia was adopted in December 2016. Within this constitutional function, a new practice of drafting laws by the HRD Office is being exercised.

National Ombudsman of the Netherlands Reinier van Zutphen and Ombudsman of St. Maarten Nilda Arduin are both urging the government of St. Maarten to make haste with the recovery and reconstruction of St. Maarten, as the peak of the 2018 hurricane season is nearing.

Man overcharged for hospital stay complains to Ombudsman
A man complained to Ombudsman Peter Tyndall after he was charged 1,500€ for a number of hospital stays. This was despite a cap of 750€ on such charges at the time. The man, who suffers from a severe kidney condition, was admitted to two different hospitals over 12 months. He spent a total of 30 nights in hospital. At the time there was a 75€ per day charge for a hospital stay.
