    Dutch National Ombudsman Reinier Van Zutphen will host another Poldershop in The Hague on Friday, 1 November 2019. This edition of the Poldershop is about how Ombudsman assess the actions of the government and on what basis they reach their decisions. Input and results from this Poldershop will inform an IOI Best Practice Paper to be published next year.

    The promotion and defense of the rights of the child are fundamental tasks of the State and of the community, being assumed not only as ethical duties, but also as obligations that have already reached the juridical level, based on national and international instruments. Therefore, celebrating the day of the child implies to affirm its singularity as a holder of autonomous rights, specifically recognized to meet the special needs demanded by the different stages of development of childhood and adolescence.

    FRA publishes Fundamental Rights Report 2019

    The year 2018 brought both progress and setbacks in terms of fundamental rights protection. The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) has published its Fundamental Rights Report 2019 and FRA´s opinion on the main developments in the thematic areas covered. The report reviews major developments in the field, identifying both achievements and remaining areas of concern.

    CY issues corrective measures for improvement of Taipei City’s roadside parking fee collection

    According to Taipei City Parking Management and Development Office (PMDO) statistics, the accumulated amount owed by the city’s top parking fee defaulter for the period from the start of September 2005 to the end of 2016 totaled just over NT$4.36 million (US$139,000).

    IOI History

    In order to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its foundation in 1978, the IOI decided to embark on a publication project and commissioned Professor Richard Carver, Senior Lecturer in Human Rights and Governance at Oxford Brooks University, with the task of writing a “History of the IOI”. Print copies of Richard Carver's book on “A Mission to Justice – The International Ombudsman Institute 1978-2018” can be purchased from the IOI.

    IOE 2019 – Special event on women leaders in Ombudsman and oversight institutions

    For the first-time ever, the International Ombud Expo 2019 scheduled to hold in Sheraton Abuja, Nigeria from 28 – 31 October, 2019 will include a special event dedicated to showcase through pictures, sharing of experiences, and expert discussions the contributions of women leaders in these institutions. Women have contributed immensely towards the development and impact of ombudsman and related oversight institutions across the globe. But this influence has remained largely unnoticed.  More so, there is no systematic data available anywhere on this.  The special event is aimed at closing this gap

    NPM visited 21 places of detention until August

    From the beginning of this year until mid-August, the National Prevention Mechanism (NPM) of Portugal has carried out 21 monitoring visits to places of deprivation of liberty. Of the 21 visits made, 13 went to prisons, four to Temporary Settlement Centers and Matched Spaces (EECIT), two to Educational Centers and two to places of detention by the police.

    Ombuds Day – 10 October 2019

    This year marks the second annual celebration of a highly impactful profession that has been around for centuries, but still remains unknown. On 10 October 2019, the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Dispute Resolution Section Ombuds Committee invites you to the celebration of the ombudsman profession. Ombuds Day is inclusive of all types of ombuds and will occur on the second Thursday of October each year.
