BC Ombudsperson releases 2023 report “Time to Right the Wrong”
The Ombudsperson of British Colombia (BC) released its report on 18 July 2023. It addresses the recent complaints to the Ombudsperson from surviving members of the Doukhobor community, who were apprehended, institutionalized and maltreated as children in the 1950s. The report draws on information from a 1999 BC Ombudsman investigation and report, renewing the call for both an apology and compensation.

Ombudsman publishes special report on return of third country nationals in 2022
In its special report, the Office of the Greek Ombudsman stated, that forced returns of third country nationals to their countries of origin are further reduced in 2022, however, the number of detainees in Pre-removal Centres and Police stations is disproportionately high. At the same time, complaints on illegal pushbacks are rising, reinforcing the EU Commission's proposal to member-states to establish independent border monitoring mechanisms.

Chief Ombudsman calls for immediate halt to use of spit hoods on vulnerable prisoners
Following inspections at the minimum-to-high security Christchurch Women's Prison and Wellington's Arohata Prison, Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier called on the Department of Corrections to never again use spit hoods on vulnerable prisoners including young people and disabled people.

Ombudswoman requests constitutional review of the Mandatory Health Insurance Act amendments
Ombudswoman Tena Šimonović Einwalter submitted a request for a constitutional review of certain provisions of the amendments to the Mandatory Health Insurance Act to the Constitutional Court at the end of June. According to these provisions, some citizens are required to personally visit the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance every three months to maintain their health insurance coverage.

Globally Sharing Public Institution Comprehensive Integrity Assessment
Korea’s anti-corruption policies, including the Public Institution Comprehensive Integrity Assessment, were introduced to 189 State Parties during the United Nations Convention against Corruption meeting held in Vienna, from June 12 to 16, 2023. The ACRC shared Korea’s anti-corruption policies and engaged in discussions on internationally pending issues relating to anti-corruption at the 14th UNCAC Implementation Review Group and the 14th Working Group on Prevention meeting.

Toronto’s First Deputy Ombudsman to tackle systemic barriers to housing
On 20 July 2023, Ombudsman Kwame Addo announced that Reema Patel will be Toronto's first Deputy Ombudsman. Leading a new housing unit at Ombudsman Toronto, Patel will oversee the fairness of the City of Toronto's housing policies and programs. Patel will officially join the Ombudsman Toronto office on July 31, 2023, at which time she will begin the important work of building the housing unit.

Ombudsman Punjab resolves to address grievances of the business community
Ombudsman Punjab Major Azam Suleman Khan (Retd.) visited the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) at the invitation of its President, Kashif Anwar, and discussed matters of mutual interest including issues faced by the business community relating to public sector departments. The Ombudsman Punjab assured the business community of his department's full support to resolve their problems.

Mr. SUGAWARA Nozomu was appointed Director General of the Administrative Evaluation Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan. After duties of a deputy Director-General of the Digital Agency, he took up the role of Director-General of AEB, Ombudsman of Japan, on 7 July 2023.

Ombudsman asks Frontex about role in rescue operations after Greek boat tragedy
European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly has opened an own-initiative inquiry aimed at clarifying Frontex’s role in search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean sea following the drowning of hundreds of people off the coast of Greece on 14 June 2023. Ms O’Reilly has asked to inspect a wide range of documents concerning Frontex’s responsibilities to rescue those in distress at seas.

On 16 May 2023, the Committee on Domestic and Ethnic Affairs of the Control Yuan convened an inquiry session. This session concerned a corrective case against the Hsinchu County Government regarding their handling of an urban renewal project in Hsinchu city.

Visit of Ombudsman Sindh to Thailand
On the invitation of Chief Ombudsman of Thailand Mr. Somsak Suwansujarit, the Hon’ble Ombudsman Sindh visited Thailand to attend the IOI Asian Regional Meeting 2023 and International Seminar in Bangkok, Thailand from 9th to 12th July, 2023. This event brought together Ombudsman colleagues of the Asian Region of the IOI.

Office of the Ombudsman launches 2022/23 Annual report
The Ombudsman Hong Kong published its 2022/23 Annual report in July 2023. According to the institution, the Office has maintained uninterrupted public access to the services. They met all targets of performance as pledged, with 5,357 complaints received and 5,323 complains concluded in 2022.

IOI Asian Regional Meeting held in Bangkok
As Asian Regional President of the IOI, the Chief Ombudsman of Thailand, Mr. Somsak Suwansujarit, hosted the Regional Meeting 2023 on 10 July 2023, in Bangkok, Thailand. In conjuction to the Regional Meeting a seminar was held under the theme "Asian Ombudsman as a Mechanism for Promoting Fair Administration, Good Governance and the Rule of Law", which was followed by a press conference.

IOI President undertakes formal exchange with the Mayor of Kaohsiung, Mr Chen Chi-Mai
IOI President Chris Field PSM was delighted to meet, and participate in a formal exchange, with the Mayor of Kaohsiung, Mr Chen Chi-Mai. The meeting was also attended by a number of the Mayor’s staff as well as President Chen Chu and Members of the Control Yuan.
