 2024-10-17The Ombudsman of the Republic of Angola celebrates for the first time the International Day of the Ombudsman
The event was held on October 10th and included an opening speech by the Angolan Ombudsman, the representative of the National Assembly, the interim UN representative in Angola, the PNUD representative in Angola, followed by presentations of virtual speeches by Her Excellency the President of the International Ombudsman Institute, Dra. Nashieli Ramírez Hernández, the Executive Director of the International Ombudsman Association, Dra. Ellen Miller, the Secretary of the African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA), Dra Caroline Sokoni, and other representatives of Angolan state bodies.

 2024-10-17South Australian Ombudsman's 2023-24 Annual Report tabled in parliament
The South Australian Ombudsman’s 2023-24 Annual Report was tabled in parliament on Tuesday 15 October 2024. The Ombudsman, Ms Emily Strickland, reported a five per cent increase in the number of complaints received – rising to just over 4600. More than 180 complaints were resolved by agreement including through the use of statutory conciliation powers.

 2024-10-17Mediation Case: Lands Department attentive to public concern with prompt actions to address risk of tree collapse
A village resident was concerned about the condition of the trees on the government land nearby, particularly a large tree adjacent to his house, which had grown taller and taller with its trunk leaning more significantly. The Ombudsman’s Office sympathised with his long-standing concern, given that tree collapse had caused casualties time and time again in the past.

En consonancia con el objetivo del Instituto Internacional del Ombudsman (IIO) de promover el intercambio de información y ayudar a sus miembros a desarrollar capacidades, la Comisión de Derechos Humanos de la Ciudad de México desarrolló, entre mayo de 2023 y mayo de 2024, el proyecto “Construcción de una agenda común y acciones estratégicas en materia de derechos humanos para América Latina y el Caribe desde los Organismos No Jurisdiccionales en el contexto post COVID-19”. El proyecto fue financiado por el programa de subvenciones regionales del IIO.

On 30 September 2024, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar, at Brdo pri Kranju hosted the fourth President’s Forum, in the forefront of which was the right to healthy a living environment. During the debate, Deputy Ombudsman, Dr Dijana Možina Zupanc, emphasised that violations of human rights in this field are ongoing, since every year the institution receives almost 200 complaints, of which approximately one fifth is valid.

On September 27, the Palácio de Vilalva in Lisbon hosted the conference “Five Decades of Freedom and Justice: Celebrating 50 Years of the Ombudsman and April 25”. The event, organized by the Ombudsman’s Office, marked the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of this institution in Portugal.

As AI evolves rapidly, ensuring its alignment with human rights, the rule of law, and democratic values in decision-making processes is becoming increasingly important. This training seminar was financed by the International Ombudsman Institute.

 2024-10-10Public Protector South Africa releases reports on investigations it concluded in the second quarter of this year
The Public Protector South Africa (PPSA) on 30 September 2024 issued its reports based on investigations conducted in the second quarter of the 2024/25 financial year. During this period, the PPSA received 1,489 new complaints, of which 756 were early resolution, 641 related to a lack of service delivery, while 92 were in respect of allegations of maladministration and related improprieties in the conduct of state affairs.

 2024-10-10CY issues correction to Ministry of Labor and New Taipei City Government on forced unpaid leave to foreign fishermen
An investigation conducted by Control Yuan has found that after the end of Taiwan’s neritic squid fishing season in September 2023, employers and agents flexibly adjusted fishing manpower using “consensual termination of contract” to avoid requirements of the Labor Standards Act. As a result, 64 foreign fishermen were forced to take unpaid leave, denied the three-year guarantee of work in their contracts, and not given severance pay.
