Les cadres du Médiateur de la République désormais bien outillés. Le 13 et 14 juin 2019 s’est tenu, au siège de l’institution du Médiateur de la République à Porto-Novo, un séminaire d’appropriation de la loi 2017-43 du 02 juillet 2018 portant régime juridique d’emploi des collaborateurs externes de l’Etat et les lois modificatives du Statut Général de la Fonction Publique au profit des cadres du Médiateur de la République.

2019-07-15Office of the Ombudsman and Anti-Corruption Commission sign memorandum of understanding
The Ombudsman of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Leon Jenkins-Johnston Esq. and the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission Francis Ben-Kaifala Esq. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on behalf of the two institutions. The aim of the MOU is to foster collaboration among the two institutions in the fight against Corruption, Administrative Injustice and Maladministration in the Public service.

The Ararteko – Ombudsman of the Basque Country and the Basque Parliament have jointly organized the seminar “The Law of the Ararteko. Proposals for the Future. Rethinking Ombuds institutions” as part of the “Legeen geroa – The Future of Legislation” cycle, which will be held at the Basque Parliament on 12 and 13 June 2023. Registrations for the event are possible until 2 June 2023.

During the IOI World Board meeting in Vienna last week, the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands, Reinier van Zutphen, presented to the board the title and logo of the world conference that will be held in The Hague, The Netherlands in May 2024. He also announced the launch of the conference web page.

2023-05-17The Commissioner for Human Rights publishes report “Human rights by design - future-proofing human rights protection in the era of AI”
On 9 May 2023, the Commissioner for Human Rights published her report and recommendations “Human rights by design - future-proofing human rights protection in the era of AI”. She highlights 3 major obstacles and 3 priority areas of actions to ensure human rights are safeguarded in the design, development and deployment of AI. She also emphasises the key role National Human Rights Structures, including Ombudsman institutions, play in monitoring and supervising human rights in AI systems.

2023-05-17Examen de la France par les Nations Unies sur le respect des droits de l’enfant
Les 9 et 10 mai, l’État français a été auditionné par le Comité des droits de l’enfant des Nations Unies dans le cadre du 6e examen de la France sur l’effectivité de la Convention internationale des droits de l’enfant (CIDE). En France, le Défenseur des droits est l'organisation reconnue par le Comité pour veiller au respect des droits de l’enfant. Dans le cadre du 6e examen périodique de la France, actuellement en cours, le Défenseur des droits est intervenu pour apporter son expertise aux différentes étapes clés de la procédure.

2023-05-17Toronto’s Ombudsman sees record increase in complaints
Toronto’s Ombudsman says the City clearly has more work to do to ensure it serves people fairly. In his 2022 Annual Report released on 25 April 2023, Kwame Addo cites the record increase in complaints to his office, noting that "whether it was through unclear communication, inaccessible services, or inconsistent decision making, the City was not always putting the public first.”

2019-07-11Ombudsman welcomes Venice Principles
On 2 May 2019, the Meeting of the Ministers’ Deputies of the Council of Europe endorsed the “Principles on the Protection and Promotion of the Ombudsman Institution” (“The Venice Principles”). The Gibraltar Public Services Ombudsman, welcomes the Venice Principles and fully supports the implementation of these internationally accepted standards.

A new report by the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs), Cecilia Jimenez-Damary, outlines the work of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in addressing internal displacement. It comes following a series of consultations with NHRIs and regional NHRI networks, including the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI).

2019-07-09Czech Ombudswoman supports Polish Ombudsman who faces criticism for defending human rights in Poland
A number of international organisations and networks, namely ENNHRI, Equinet, GANHRI, IOI and OHCHR Europe, issued a statement in which they openly supported the Commissioner for Human Rights of Poland Adam Bodnar who is facing a strong criticism including the hateful campaign against him and hate speech for publicly protecting the right to a fair trial and the prohibition from inhumane and degrading treatment.

Together with IOI President Chris Field, Ombudsperson and IOI Secretary General Gaby Schwarz welcomed colleagues from around the world at the premises of the Austrian Ombudsman Board in Vienna.
