2025-09-05The State Comptroller and Ombudsman presented the Ombudsman's 51st Annual Report to the Speaker of the Knesset
On July 1, 2025 the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel, Mr. Matanyahu Englman, presented to the Speaker of the Knesset (Israeli parliament) the Ombudsman Annual Report 51 for the year 2024. Nearly 22,000 complaints were received in 2024 representing an increase of 50% compared with 2019.

2023-12-14Annual Report on the activities of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture in 2022
On 18 December 2022, 20 years had passed since the adoption, by the UN General Assembly, of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Thanks to the implementation of the OPCAT into the Polish legal system, the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture has been operating in Poland for nearly 15 years already as part of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights.

2023-12-14Seimas Ombudspersons’ Office pays visit to Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman
On 20-24 November 2023, Seimas Ombudsperson Erika Leonaitė and the advisors of the Human Rights Division of the Office visited Copenhagen. The study visit was organised by the Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman's Office, which not only deals with complaints, like most Ombudsman institutions, but also carries out national torture prevention functions in accordance with the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

His findings are based on a survey of government employees to assess awareness of disclosure mechanisms, their accessibility and the trust they inspire.

2023-12-14BC independent oversight offices urge public consultation, legislative reform on use of artificial intelligence
Three oversight Officers of the Legislature are urging the BC government to expand its consultation on draft principles for the responsible use of artificial intelligence to members of the public in a letter to Minister of Citizens’ Services Lisa Beare. The ministry’s consultation is currently restricted to employees of the BC public service. The officers are also calling on government to ensure clear legislation is in place to protect the interest of British Columbians when AI is used.

2023-12-14Malawi Parliament passes Ombudsman (Amendment) Bill
On 7 December 2023, the Malawi Parliament passed the Ombudsman (Amendment) Bill 2023 after close to one and half hours of scrutiny. This bill seeks to amend the Ombudsman Act (Cap. 3:07) in order to clarify and strengthen the legal framework of the jurisdiction and mandate of the Ombudsman.

The African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA) successfully concluded its 7th General Assembly in Kigali, Rwanda, from 27-29 November 2023. Themed "Navigating Ethical Dilemmas in Mediation and Ombudsman Roles," this assembly was a pivotal forum for leaders and delegates from across Africa to engage in meaningful discussions regarding the evolving ethical considerations in mediation and Ombudsman services.

2023-12-07Règlement européen sur l’intelligence artificielle : la Défenseure des droits appelle à la nécessaire prise en compte des droits fondamentaux et du principe de non-discrimination
En avril 2021, la Commission européenne a publié une proposition de règlement sur l’intelligence artificielle (IA). Depuis, le Défenseur des droits et la Commission nationale consultative des droits de l’Homme ont respectivement apporté leurs contributions. Tous deux plaident pour la prise en compte des droits fondamentaux et du droit de la non-discrimination dans le cadre juridique en cours de négociation.

Under the chairmanship of Major Azam Suleman Khan (Retd) (Hilal-i-Imtiaz), Hon’ble Ombudsman Punjab, the Office of Ombudsman Punjab (Pakistan) celebrated the International Children's Day with great enthusiasm. Chief Provincial Commissioner for Children, Ombudsman Punjab and senior officers of the Office were also present on the occasion.

2023-12-07Civil Aviation Authority’s decision-making on New Zealand Sign Language in airline safety briefing videos unreasonable
The Chief Ombudsman has found that the Civil Aviation Authority’s decision-making processes were unreasonable when it decided not to amend the rules to include New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) in airline safety briefing videos. Peter Boshier began investigating after receiving a complaint from Deaf Action NZ about the response the CAA gave to its 2018 petition, calling for NZSL to be included.
