    Thailand Marks 25th Anniversary of Ombudsman Institution with National and International Seminar

    To commemorate the 25th Anniversary of its establishment, the Office of the Ombudsman of Thailand hosted a seminar from 24–25 April 2025 at the Centara Life Government Complex Hotel and Convention Centre in Bangkok. The event reaffirmed the Ombudsman’s commitment to a proactive, people-centered approach and brought together stakeholders from government, civil society, and international organizations. To commemorate this milestone, the Office of the Ombudsman of Thailand published a special 25th Anniversary commemorative volume, featuring congratulatory messages and insightful contributions on successful stories from leading Ombudsman institutions across the globe. This publication, supported by the IOI Regional Subsidy Programme 2024/2025, reflects the shared commitment to the values of good governance as well as rights and liberties protection.

    Ombudsman concludes Round Table Conference on the Impact of AI in the Labour Market

    The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon, delivered the concluding remarks at the round table conference “The Ripple Effect of AI in the Labour Market” held in Valletta. The event was organised by the Malta Chamber of Commerce, the General Workers Union, and the Malta Business Bureau as part of the EU-funded TransFormWork II project, which aims to promote a just transition toward the work of the future through better and more effective regulation of artificial intelligence.

    Ombudsman probes enhanced management of countryside ancillary tourist facilities to pursue “tourism is everywhere”

    NHRIs reveal key developments and challenges impacting rule of law across the European Union

    For the sixth consecutive year, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in the European Union (EU) have provided insights into their national rule of law landscapes. Overall, these show negative trends in areas such as the enabling space for NHRIs, civil society space and human rights defenders, access to justice, and media freedom. Despite the concerning picture, NHRIs continue working to counter these challenges and some progress is evident. Building on this, they recommend how policymakers can strengthen the rule of law across the EU.

    SPSO Launches Training for Handling Child Friendly Complaints

    Rosemary Agnew, the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman (SPSO), has launched an online training to help public service organisations handle complaints from or involving children and young people. The online training course is designed for complaints handlers and frontline staff. It shows how organisations can put children and young people’s rights at the heart of the complaints process.

    Celebration of the 20th anniversary of the election of the first Ombudsman in Angola

    On April 22 and 23, 2025, the Central Ceremony and the International Conference marking the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the election of the first Ombudsman of the Republic of Angola took place at the Auditorium of the Palace of Justice in Luanda, under the theme: “Ombudsman: 20 Years Serving Citizens and the Democratic Rule of Law”, as part of the celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of National Independence. The main objective was to commemorate both the 50th anniversary of Angola’s Independence and the 20th anniversary of the election of the first Ombudsman, and to reflect on the role of the Ombudsman in a democratic state through experience-sharing with national and international public and private entities.

    The President of the Czech Republic confirmed the creation of the Children's Ombudsman with his signature

    The Czech President sealed the amendment of the Ombudsman Act with his signature. The law will enter into force on 1 July 2025. Thus, the institution of the Children's Ombudsman will be created on that date. Until the election of its representative, the duties will be carried out by the Deputy Ombudsman, Vít Alexander Schorm. The amendment also extends the ombudsman's mandate to include a so-called "National Human Rights Institution" whose aim is to protect and promote human rights in the Czech Republic.

    Outgoing Ombudsman Calls for Legislative Reform

    Rosemary Agnew, one of Scotland’s leading public figures, has called for legislative reforms as she prepares to step down after eight years as the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman (SPSO). Throughout her time leading the organisation, she has repeatedly highlighted the need to modernise SPSO legislation to enable the Ombudsman to better serve the public and improve accountability in public services. Significantly, she has called for changes in how complaints are made to the SPSO and the ability to investigate complaints under her own initiative.
