In a special report released on March 21, 2018, the Québec Ombudsman spoke out against the detention conditions of people serving intermittent sentences in Québec correctional facilities. The increase in intermittent sentences has exacerbated the problem of overcrowding in many facilities, especially on Saturdays and Sundays.

Ombudsman meets colleagues from Poland and other Baltic states
On 21-22 May, Ombudsman, head of Children Rights Division and lawyer of Prevention Unit meet Children Ombudsmen of Poland and Lithuania and representatives of the Chancellor of Justice Office of Estonia. Such meetings happen annually and participants discuss topical children rights issues in Poland and Baltic states.

Public Protector pays courtesy call on the Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs
The Public Protector, Mrs Caroline C.Z Sokoni paid a courtesy call on the Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rev Godfridah Sumaili, on Tuesday 10th July 2018. The two leaders explored among other issues ways of collaborating between the two institutions in the promotion of national values and social justice among Zambians.

New Zealand elected to lead regional group
New Zealand’s Chief Ombudsman, Peter Boshier, has been elected to an important international role following a meeting last month of some 20 regional ombudsmen. From April next year, Mr Boshier will be the Regional President of IOI’s Australasian and Pacific Ombudsman Region (APOR). He already serves as one of three APOR Board Directors.

Western Australia Ombudsman requested to develop Reportable Conduct Scheme
The Western Australian Ombudsman has been requested by the Western Australian Government to plan and develop a Reportable Conduct Scheme. The Scheme arises from a five-year national Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
