Depriving the inmates' rights must be argumented, necessary and proportional
Depriving the rights on liberty does not automatically lead to the loss of other civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights. Amongst them is the right to correspondence, which was denied to a prisoner who wanted to complain against the quality of service and price of the business providing services in prison. The Ministry of Justice accepted the Ombudswoman's recommendation and instructed all criminal bodies to prevent such situations in the future.

Adama Toungara, nouveau Médiateur de la République
« Le Président de la République, Son Excellence Monsieur Alassane Ouattara, a procédé ce mercredi 4 avril 2018 à la signature d’un décret portant nomination du Médiateur de la République. Ainsi, Monsieur Adama Toungara, est nommé Médiateur de la République », a annoncé le Secrétaire Général de la Présidence de la République, M. Patrick Achi. Par ce décret, M. Adama Toungara succède à Monsieur N’Golo Coulibaly, nommé depuis le 14 juillet 2017, Président de la Haute Autorité pour la Bonne Gouvernance.

Chief Ombudsman’s opinion on OIA requests about Operation Burnham
Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier today released his Final Opinion on five complaints concerning the New Zealand Defence Force’s withholding of information related to Operation Burnham in Afghanistan in 2010. Peter Boshier found the NZDF was justified in withholding most of the requested information under the Official Information Act.

Expanded jurisdiction over municipalities takes effect
Marianne Ryan, Alberta’s ninth Ombudsman, welcomes legislative changes that expand her office’s jurisdiction to include municipalities. The updated legislation takes effect April 1, 2018 and includes ‘municipalities’ to the jurisdiction, alongside Alberta government departments, designated professional organizations and the Patient Concerns Resolution Process of Alberta Health Services.

The total number of complaints delivered in 2017 to the Ombudsman was 8,191. People increasingly turn to the Ombudsman's Office with their problems in the sphere of social security and also number of complaints concerning work and employment increased by 39 percent.

Con una recorrida por las instalaciones de la nueva sede en Rosario –que entró en funcionamiento en enero pasado– el organismo provincial reafirmó el eje de su labor para promover la protección de los derechos de niñas, niños y adolescentes.

Irish Ombudsman welcomes progress on implementing Magdalen report recommendations
IOI President and Irish Ombudsman Peter Tyndall welcomed the Minister for Justice and Equality’s announcement that it will move forward on implementing the recommendations following the investigation into how the Department of Justice and Equality administered the Magdalen Restorative Justice scheme. The report of his investigation, Opportunity Lost, was critical of how the Department administered the scheme, including how some women who worked in the Magdalen laundries have been wrongly refused access to the scheme.
