Victorian Ombudsman to re-investigate insurers’ handling of workers compensation claims and WorkSafe oversight
Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass has begun a follow up investigation to her previous Investigation into the management of complex workers compensation claims and WorkSafe oversight. In that 2016 investigation, she found that Victoria’s workers compensation scheme had failed some particularly vulnerable people.

Parliamentary Ombudsman presents Annual Report 2017 to the President of the House of Representatives
The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Mr Anthony C. Mifsud, called upon the President of the House of Representatives, the Hon. Angelo Farrugia to present the Office of the Ombudsman’s Annual Report for 2016. During the meeting with the Speaker, the Ombudsman announced that during the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsman in Skopje, Macedonia, he was appointed as Secretary General of the Association.

Condenan a cuatro funcionarios penitenciarios por el incendio que provocó la muerte de dos detenidos
Fueron condenados a la pena de dos años de prisión en suspenso, acusados por el delito de homicidio culposo agravado. Es la única sentencia contra funcionarios penitenciarios federales por la muerte de personas detenidas recaída en los años recientes, y la primera en la que este organismo participó como querellante.

Homeless family left in crowded conditions while council delayed making decision
A mother and her five children were accommodated in a damp and mouldy single bedroom, too small for the number of people, by Ealing council while it took too long to decide their homelessness status. A Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman investigation found the council’s delays added three months onto a six month stay in the unsuitable accommodation.

Discussing EU’s role towards the Sustainable Development Goals
The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) took part in the conference ‘SDGs, Climate and the Future of Europe’ on 31 May in Milan, organised by the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development. The meeting discussed the key role that the EU can play towards advancing the 2030 agenda and will feed into a European Commission reflection paper on the subject.

Victorian Ombudsman tables report on poor communication and delay exacerbated distress of taxi licence holders
Taxi and hire car licence holders were given the “bureaucratic run-around” when seeking payments from the Fairness Fund set up by the state government to provide them prompt financial assistance, the Victorian Ombudsman has found. Tabling her Investigation into the administration of the Fairness Fund for taxi and hire car licence holders in the Victorian Parliament today, Ombudsman Deborah Glass said the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources had executed its management of the Fund poorly.

La Defensoría del Pueblo de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires observó las movilizaciones a favor y en contra del aborto
El operativo estuvo a cargo de 400 profesionales encabezados por el Defensor del Pueblo Alejandro Amor, que permanecieron en la Plaza del Congreso y sus alrededores desde las 11 de la mañana de día miércoles 13 de junio hasta las 8 de la mañana siguiente mientras la Cámara de Diputados de la Nación debatía el proyecto de ley de interrupción voluntaria del embarazo. El propósito fue verificar el dispositivo de seguridad desplegado por el Gobierno porteño y supervisar el desarrollo de las marchas.
