Alberta Ombudsman Gord Button resigned from his position as a Director representing the North American Region on the Board of Directors of the I.O.I. In the previous membership year Gord Button acted as Treasurer of the I.O.I. and significantly contributed to the success of the Institute. 

Minority communities in Hungary have had great expectations about the new Parliament elected in April 2010. They were hoping that the two-third majority of the governing political forces would pass the legislation vital for their interests that had not been adopted for years due to the lack of political consent.

The EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) published a report about the fundamental rights situation of persons entering Greece irregularly at its land border with Turkey. This report is based on field research in the Evros region in January 2011.

The Ombudsman observed problems and has made recommendations to the Minister for Finance and the Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank. According to the Ombudsman, the rights of the citizens as consumers are often violated by credit institutions.

The EU ombudsman recently expressed his intention to draft a statement of ethical principles for EU civil servants. In order to take full account of best practice in the Member States, he sent out a questionnaire to the national Ombudsman institutions in Europe the results of which can now be found online.

On 3 March 2011, Mr Juris Jansons was elected to the post of Ombudsman by the Latvian Parliament.
