The European Ombudsman P. Nikiforos Diamandouros has convened a high‐level public seminar to explore what concrete measures European and national institutions can take to (re)gain EU citizensʹ trust. The seminar "Europe in crisis: the challenge of winning citizens' trust" takes place on 24^th April 2012 .

The tenure of present Ombudsman Asad Ashraf Malik was extended by a period of four years.

Ontario Ombudsman André Marin will be presented with the Ontario Bar Association’s 2012 Award for Distinguished Service at an award ceremony to be held in Toronto on April 26.  

The Federal Ombudsman of Belgium presented its Annual Report 2011. The Annual Report in French language is now also available on the IOI website.

In March a man died after being tasered by the Police in the Sydney. The NSW Police Force set up a critical incident investigation team to investigate the death and announced that the NSW Ombudsman will provide independent oversight of the investigation.

At the IOI World Conference held in Wellington, New Zealand in November 2012, institutional members in good standing will be requested to vote on the IOI’s new by-laws. A first draft of these new by-laws, has been sent to members requesting them to send their comments and remarks.

In a press release the Hungarian Commissioner for Fundamental Rights published his findings on how the police handled two demonstrations held in Budapest in 2011.

New Ombudsman and Health Complaints Commissioner of Tasmania will take up office in March 2012.
