Process must not come before the rights of the individual when it comes to the reporting of abuse in the disability sector, said Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass. Tabling the second phase report, Reporting and investigation of allegations of abuse in the disability sector, Ms Glass said the system should support the people, not the other way around.

This summary report outlines relevant international and European standards and reviews national legislation and policies addressing violence against children with disabilities. The summary also explores the extent and different causes, settings and forms of such violence, and presents measures and initiatives to prevent it.

 

This Casebook contains summaries of recent cases the Ombudsman has dealt with. The Ombudsman hopes that by sharing the outcomes of cases, we will all learn from the mistakes and good practice of others.

In recent days, the Ombudsman Office in coordination with UNICEF country office launched five day training on increasing capacities to monitor the child rights for the members of the national preventive group and heads of the Regional Offices of the Ombudsman. UNICEF international experts Mr. Reider Hiermann and Ms. Anna Nordenmark were involved into this event as trainers.

The 11^th IOI World Conference will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 13 to 19 November 2016. The Office of the Ombudsman of Thailand will be the host of this quadrennial event which – for the first time – will be held within the Asian Region of the IOI.

Veterans Ombudsman Guy Parent released today an assessment of Veterans Affairs Canada’s implementation of the eight recommendations put forth in his 2011 report on “Veterans’ Right to Know Reasons for Decisions: A Matter of Procedural Fairness” and in his 2012 report on “Veterans’ Right to Disclosure: A Matter of Procedural Fairness”. The two reports identified areas of improvement needed to ensure transparency and fairness in Veterans Affairs Canada’s disability application and adjudication process.

Jorge Armando Otálora Gómez, Defensor del Pueblo de Colombia, fue elegido como presidente de la Federación Iberoamericana del Ombudsman (FIO). La decisión de los Defensores de América Latina, el Caribe, España y Portugal se dio en el marco de la Vigésima Asamblea Anual de la FIO, realizada en Montevideo, Uruguay, que durante tres días fue escenario de importantes reuniones y acuerdos de cooperación.
