Australia | The Office of the Inspector-General of Taxation launches newsletter

The Office of the Inspector-General of Taxation (IGT) launched a newsletter called IGoT News!. The first edition was issued on 6 July 2017. IGoT News! will more regularly inform readers of the acitivities of the Inspector-General of Taxation (IGT) and what it is hearing from the community, particularly from its complaint handling service. Special editions may also be issued from time to time to advise readers of new or significant developments in its work or the administration of the tax system more generally.

The IGT's Review program continues to deliver improvements for the benefit of all Australians. Two significant reviews were released publicly, a Work Program was announced in January from which three reviews have been commenced and a fourth review has just been announced at the request of Senate Economics References Committee.

The IGT's complaints handling service continues to flourish. A broad range of taxpayers and tax practitioners have sought its assistance in resolving their disputes with the ATO and the TPB and the institution has delivered positive results.

In addition to reviews and complaints, the IGT has also:

• lodged submissions to Parliamentary inquiries into Taxpayer Engagement and unpaid Superannuation Guarantee;

• engaged with its international counterparts on taxpayer rights issues;

• engaged with local and regionally-based tax practitioners; and

• joined the International Ombudsman Institute.
