CANADA | Ontario Ombudsman’s advanced investigative training course welcomes participants from around the world

This year, the Ontario Ombudsman’s annual investigative training course, “Sharpening Your Teeth” (or SYT for short) was held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from November 5-7, 2018. Senior Ombudsman staff have trained hundreds of ombudsmen, investigators and other watchdog staff at this Toronto course and at customized, on-site SYT courses throughout the world – most recently in Manitoba, Canada; The Hague, Netherlands; and Anchorage, Alaska.

This year, Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé welcomed 85 participants from across Canada and around the world, including Ethiopia, Tonga, Mauritius, Ireland,  Bermuda, and the United States. The course covered topics such as investigation planning, assessing evidence, interviewing witnesses, report-writing, and using digital tools for investigations and communications.
As one participant noted: “The content was extremely useful. I have been an investigator for three months and this training gave me the additional tools I needed. I certainly feel energized and enthusiastic about my work even more. I can understand why it is world-renowned.”

The next Toronto course will be held from October 21-23, 2019, in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Ontario Ombudsman also offers customized courses on a cost-recovery basis. Anyone interested in either a customized training course or the 2019 Toronto course can send an email for more information to training@ombudsman.on.ca.
