AZERBAIJAN | Ombudsman actively advocates for recognition of normative basis of reproductive health and rights

Azerbaijani Ombudsman’s Office has been cooperating with the UNFPA Azerbaijan from the beginning of its establishment. In 2015, in the frame of this cooperation it was started to assess the country’s progress in implementing treaty body recommendations on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

The purpose of this document is to support National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), to conduct systematic national inquiries on human rights issues relating to SRHR.

Ombudsman’s active engagement in providing appropriate conditions for the national authorities for discussing SRHR issues has been highly appreciated by the UNFPA.

In its Guide in Support of National Human Rights Institutions the UNFPA mentioned that “In Azerbaijan, an NHRI country assessment unveiled gaps between laws and practice, and underscored the human rights dimensions of these issues. In doing so, it placed SRHR issues squarely on the national agenda.”

The collaboration between Azerbaijani Ombudsman’s Office and UNFPA to update indicators, tracking the Government’s progress on SRHR, will help ensure that SRHR issues remain on the national agenda.
