    Office of the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman Launched

    A new Ombudsman’s office for investigating complaints about public services is launched on 1 April 2016. The Office of the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) has been created by the Ombudsman (NI) Act 2016, a new piece of Assembly legislation aimed at making it easier for the public to complain about public services and at increasing the public accountability of public service providers. Mrs Marie Anderson, has been appointed as the first NIPSO.

    The report on “Preventing torture in Africa: Lessons and experiences from National Human Rights Institutions” marks the end of a three-year project carried out by the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) in collaboration with the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI).     After Ombudsman intervention, the Department of Education and Skills reconsider seeking recovery of overpayments made in error to students

    In February 2016 the Ombudsman, Peter Tyndall, initiated a systemic investigation involving the Department of Education and Skills and the Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI). SUSI had been established as Ireland's single national awarding authority for all higher and further education grants. It replaced sixty-six local awarding authorities and began processing applications in 2012.

    On 20 April Hong Kong Ombudsman, Ms Connie Lau, announced that a new section dedicated to complaint cases relating to the Code on Access to Information has been added to the website of the Office of The Ombudsman. Furthermore, the Office collaborated with Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) to produce a TV mini-series called “The Ombudsman 5-minuter”.

    Manitoba Ombudsman lays “snooping” charge under The Personal Health Information Act

    Manitoba Ombudsman conducted an investigation following a report from Manitoba Health, Healthy Living and Seniors related to a privacy breach at its Provincial Drug Program. A former employee who had access to personal health information through their job, allegedly used that access to view information for purposes unrelated to their work. Upon completing the investigation, the ombudsman laid a charge against the individual under PHIA for deliberately accessing another person’s health information inappropriately.
