Seven of Austria's nine provinces have mandated the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) with monitoring the entire provincial and municipal administration. The AOB therefore submits an annual report to the National and the Federal Council on the Federal administration but also reports regularly to those seven provincial parliaments in which it also controls the provincial and municipal authorities.

Cette institution nouvellement créée succède au Médiateur de la République, au Défenseur des enfants, à la Haute autorité de lutte contre les discriminations et pour l'égalité (HALDE) ainsi qu'à la Commission nationale de déontologie de la sécurité (CNDS).

2011-06-28Ombudsman demands citizen-friendly information on radioactive contamination level in food
The European Ombudsman, P. Nikiforos Diamandouros, has asked the European Commission to provide citizen-friendly information about the maximum permitted levels of radioactive contamination of foodstuffs in the EU before and after the Fukushima accident in Japan. The Ombudsman's action follows several complaints from citizens suggesting a lack of information concerning the changes made to the maximum levels. The Ombudsman has asked the Commission to reply by 30 June 2011.

2011-06-27Parliamentary Ombudsman launches public consultation on direct access
On 14 June, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, Ann Abraham, who investigates complaints about government bodies that have not been resolved elsewhere, has launched a public consultation on whether complainants should have direct access to her service. Currently, members of the public need a referral from a Member of Parliament (MP) in order to bring their complaint to the Parliamentary Ombudsman.

2011-06-15Vienna SYT training - I.O.I. funded nine scholarships
For the second time the Sharpening Your Teeth Training for staff members of ombudsman institutions was hosted by the Vienna-based General Secretariat. The I.O.I. financed nine scholarships for participants from Lesotho, Tanzania, Uganda, Mauritius, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Saint Lucia, Sint Maarten and Romania.

The Bylaws and Governance sub-committee of the Board met in Vienna in late May. Building on the work begun at the Board meeting in Bermuda, Mats Melin produced a refined draft of possible changes to strengthen and clarify the role of the I.O.I. in a changing world.
