New weekly information service
The I.O.I. General Secretariat is delighted to offer a new communication service to the Ombudsman community. The weekly “I.O.I. Ombudsman News” brings recent ombudsman news to members and applicant institutions as well as partner organisations and institutions.

Regional subventions are a huge success
At the Bermuda Board Meeting in October 2011 the I.O.I. Board decided that the I.O.I. would provide funds up to a maximum of EUR 50,000 for regional projects. Member institutions were invited to submit project proposals with a focus on training activities. Six applicants from five of the six I.O.I. World Regions were successful in the selection process conducted by the I.O.I. Executive Committee in spring 2011.

European Region organises OPCAT workshop
On 13 and 14 September 2011 an OPCAT workshop (Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture) for Ombudsman institutions will take place in Warsaw, Poland. I.O.I. Europe cooperates with the Polish Ombudsman Institution in the organisation of this event.

Les Ombudsmans et le personnel du Bureau néo-zélandais des Ombudsmans se réjouissent d’ores et déjà d’accueillir la communauté de l'Ombudsman en Nouvelle-Zélande en novembre 2012 à l’occasion du Congrès mondial de l’I.I.O. Les invitations officielles ainsi que les informations relatives à l’inscription seront envoyées d’ici quelques mois et le site Internet du congrès sera « en ligne » sous peu.

Annual Report of the European Court of Justice
Since the establishment of the Court of Justice of the European Union in 1952, it constitutes the judicial authority of the European Union and, in cooperation with the courts and tribunals of the Member States, it ensures the uniform application and interpretation of European Union law. The annual report provides a synopsis of the case-law and much statistical information. It is available in all official EU languages.

Free SYT training for I.O.I. members
A regional subvention was granted to the North American region to hold a two-day SYT training workshop in October 2011 prior to the United States Ombudsman Annual (USOA) Conference. The training course will be presented by Ontario Ombudsman André Marin. We record our thanks for his continued support in this way.

New Human Rights Centre will prompt historic reform
Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen deals in his commentary article to his annual report with new legislation under which a national human rights institution in accordance with the UN-approved Paris Principles will be established in Finland at the beginning of 2012.

On the occasion of National Human Rights Day, the ninth International Baku Conference of Ombudspersons entitled "The cultural rights of national minorities and migrants: legal aspects and implementation" was held on 16-18 June, 2011 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Board Meeting 2011 to be held in Livingstone, Zambia
The annual meeting of the I.O.I. Board of Directors will be held in Livingstone, Zambia from 30 October to 2 November 2011. The I.O.I. is looking forward to the fruitfull discussions and upcoming decisions and would like to thank Ms Caroline Sokoni, Investigator General of Zambia, for hosting this event.

Mr Dominique Baudis new Defender of Rights
On 22 June 2011, the Council of Ministers appointed Mr Dominique Baudis for a period of six years to the post of Défenseur des droits (Defender of Rights) of France. He takes office in the newly created Ombudsman institution in France, as successor of the Médiateur de la République.

Ms Calliope Spanou new Ombudsman
On 19 May 2011, the Greek Parliament elected Ms Calliope Spanou as the new Greek Ombudsman. Ms Spanou who was Deputy Ombudsman for state - citizen relations since 2003, has been acting Ombudsman since September 2010, following the resignation of the former Greek Ombudsman, Mr Yorgos Kaminis, who was elected Mayor of Athens in November 2010.
