    Ombudsman publishes English summary of annual report 2012

    The Ombudsman put forth 548 recommendations and suggestions to the Administration in 2012. A total of 280,592 letters were received: 33,478 complaints, 371 ex officio investigations and 246,743 requests for the filing of appeals against 29 legal standards.

    In May 2013, the Québec National Assembly adopted the Act to amend the Police Act as concerns independent investigations. This Act was the result of the recommendations of the Ombudsperson, Raymonde Saint-Germain, in her special report on the investigation procedure applied in Québec for incidents involving police officers.

    Australian Federal Whistleblower Law Passed

    On 26 June 2013, the Australian Parliament passed the Public Interest Disclosure Bill, legislation which establishes the first stand-alone whistleblower protection scheme for federal public servants, contractors and employees of contractors who report wrongdoing within the Commonwealth public sector.

    New Members of the Austrian Ombudsman Board

    On 1 July 2013 the new members of the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) took office. Günther Kräuter, Gertrude Brinek and Peter Fichtenbauer were elected by the Austrian National Council for the term of office from July 2013 to June 2019. For Gertrude Brinek it is already the second term of office. In its inaugural meeting the new AOB appointed Günther Kräuter as Secretary General of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI).

    Control Yuan holds staff exchange program with Asian-Pacific and African Counterparts

    The Office of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Latvia published the English version of its Annual Report 2012. Activities undertaken by the Ombudsman’s Office have been fruitful: 2633 written submissions have been received in 2012, which is by 387 submissions more than in 2011.

    Research project on impact of systematic investigations

    The City of Toronto Ombudsman has received funding from the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) to lead a research project that will look at the impact that systemic investigations have had on the service to Toronto’s residents.
