On 21 November 2024, the Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, announced the completion of a direct investigation operation into the handling of obstructions to passageways by bicycles owned by operators of bicycle rental services of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and made eight recommendations to the Department.

Passing of an Ombudsman Trailblazer
The Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Lesotho, Advocate Tlotliso Polaki, regrets to announce to the international Ombudsman community, the passing of Honourable Mohale Henry Nt'saba on the 19th November 2024, a few months before his 100th birthday. Honourable Nt’saba was the pioneer Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Lesotho, who established the office from inception.

Site saving unfair at Yukon Parks campgrounds
The Yukon Ombudsman’s office has completed a formal investigation regarding the practice of site saving at Yukon Parks campgrounds. The investigative report concluded that the Department of Environment’s lack of enforcement due to insufficient tracking of site saving is unfair and made six recommendations.

Safeguarding Children’s Rights in the Domain of Sports and Physical Activities
In an effort to raise awareness about children’s rights in the context of sports, the Office of the Ombudsperson for Children collaborated with the Mauritius Olympic Committee to participate in a workshop titled “Safeguarding Children’s Rights in the Sports Context,” organised on 16 November 2024. The event brought together 35 participants, including athletes and coaches, to engage in meaningful discussions and training on the rights of children in sports and the ethical responsibilities of those working with young athletes.

Chief Ombudsman investigation into Associate Health Minister’s refusal to release information on author of tobacco policy advice
The Chief Ombudsman has referred record keeping issues identified during his investigation into an official information complaint against Associate Health Minister Casey Costello to the Chief Archivist. Peter Boshier began an investigation after he received a complaint about the Associate Minister’s refusal to release information on ‘who’ wrote or compiled notes she used to formulate the government’s tobacco policy.

Ombudsperson Punjab Ms. Nabila Hakim Ali Khan Advocates for Women’s Rights at Women University Multan
In a meaningful outreach initiative, the Ombudsperson Punjab, Ms. Nabila Hakim Ali Khan, visited the Women University of Multan to promote awareness about critical legal protections for women. During a seminar held on campus, Ms. Khan discussed two essential legal frameworks designed to protect women's rights: the Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010 and the Punjab Enforcement of Women Property Rights Act 2021. Her aim was to emphasise the importance of understanding and utilizing these laws to safeguard women’s rights.

University of Malta Survey on Ombudsman Institutions
The Dean, Faculty of Laws, University of Malta, a former Senior Investigating Officer with the Office of the Ombudsman in Malta and author of “The Ombudsman: too soft a take on the public administration?” (BDL 2020) is currently working on another, somewhat more ambitious work, this time considering the ombudsman institution from a global perspective. Ombudsman announces investigation results on enforcement against unauthorised land developments
The Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, on 24 October announced the completion of a direct investigation operation regarding the enforcement by the Planning Department (“PlanD”) and the Lands Department (“LandsD”) against unauthorised land developments, and made 16 major recommendations for improvement to the two departments.

Toronto Ombudsman finds major gaps with police’s registry for vulnerable persons
On 5 September 2024, Toronto's Ombudsman released his report, An Investigation into the Toronto Police Service’s Communications About its Vulnerable Persons Registry. The TPS launched the registry in December of 2019 to allow the public to file personalized de-escalation strategies to help police officers support individuals with emotional, psychological, medical, or other physical conditions. Four years later, the Ombudsman’s investigation found that only 305 people currently have their information entered into the registry.

On 22 October 2024, the Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier published his 2023/2024 Annual Report which shows more and more people are turning to the Ombudsman for help. “In 2023/24 I completed the highest number of complaints and protected disclosures ever,” Mr Boshier says.

South Australian Ombudsman's 2023-24 Annual Report tabled in parliament
The South Australian Ombudsman’s 2023-24 Annual Report was tabled in parliament on Tuesday 15 October 2024. The Ombudsman, Ms Emily Strickland, reported a five per cent increase in the number of complaints received – rising to just over 4600. More than 180 complaints were resolved by agreement including through the use of statutory conciliation powers.
