    Ombudsman passed away

    It is with great sadness that the I.O.I. informs its members that Mr. Ofentse Moatlhodi Lepodise, Ombudsman for the Republic of Botswana, passed away on 18 October 2011. Mr. Lepodise was currently serving his second four-year term of office.

    The annual meeting of the I.O.I. Board of Directors will be held in Livingstone, Zambia from 30 October to 2 November 2011. The members of the I.O.I. Board will look back at the progress made and the projects realized during the past membership year and will identify and prioritize projects and activities in the new membership year 2011 / 2012.

    Public access to court case-law contributes to predictable decision-making by the courts, unification of the decision-making practice and transparency of court decisions, and thus also to promotion of the right to a fair trial.     The Network of African National Human Rights Institutions organises workshop on SOGIE-related Complaints Handling, Investigations and Documentation

    The Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI), a regional membership organisation of African NHRIs based in Nairobi Kenya is organising a technical workshop on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression (SOGIE) for representatives of NHRIs and SOGIE-related Civil Society Organisations. The workshop will be held on July 23 – 25 in Entebbe, Uganda.

    Fourteen representatives from seven Pacific countries will undertake Ombudsman investigator training in Fiji next week. The Office of the New Zealand Ombudsman is leading the training which will take a typical complaint through the whole investigation process.

    New Director on the I.O.I. Board

    A long-standing and valuable member from the African Region left the I.O.I. Board of Directors when Ms Amina Ouédraogo (Burkina Faso) retired from her office as Médiateur du Faso in June 2011. Following a regional I.O.I. meeting Ms Traore, the new Ombudsman in Burkina Faso will fill the vacant position of an African Director on the Board.

    Office of the Ombudsman and Anti-Corruption Commission sign memorandum of understanding

    The Ombudsman of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Leon Jenkins-Johnston Esq. and the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission Francis Ben-Kaifala Esq. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on behalf of the two institutions. The aim of the MOU is to foster collaboration among the two institutions in the fight against Corruption, Administrative Injustice and Maladministration in the Public service.

    Ombudsman welcomes consultation act for indigenous peoples

    Ombudsman Eduardo Vega expressed his satisfaction and welcomes the decision of the Congress to adopt the Law on Consultation of the Indigenous Peoples on 23 August 2011. Vega called the act “a provision which constitutes a seminal step for the recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples and for institutionalising the intercultural dialogue between them and the authorities”.
