The Ombudsman, Ms Connie Lau, today (October 31) announced the completion of a direct investigation into the handling of a road section enclosed and left idle for a prolonged period. The direct investigation report has been uploaded to the Office of The Ombudsman website for public viewing.

Ontario Ombudsman and International Ombudsman Institute co-host training session in Ontario
From Oct. 23 – Oct. 25, 2017, the Ontario Ombudsman’s Office presented three one-day workshops on managing unreasonable complainant conduct for its staff and participants from other North American oversight offices. Presented by Donald Sword of the New South Wales Ombudsman, the sessions focused on techniques and strategies for mitigating challenging complainant behaviour and mediating issues arising from that behaviour.

La Procuración Penitenciaria remitió un informe de seguimiento al Comité de Derechos Humanos de la ONU
El informe fue elaborado en el marco del seguimiento de las Observaciones Finales del Comité de Derechos Humanos del año 2016 (disponible acá) sobre el quinto informe periódico de Argentina, en particular las observaciones sobre tortura y malos tratos (párr.14) y sobre condiciones de detención (párr. 24). En el transcurso de nueve años se han investigado y documentado 4312 casos de tortura y malos tratos.

From 9 - 10 October 2017 the Service Complaints Ombudsman for the Armed Forces in the United Kingdom co-hosted the 9th International Conference of Ombuds Institutions for the Armed Forces (ICOAF) in conjunction with the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of the Armed Forces (DCAF).

Control Yuan holds seniors’ human rights seminar in early response to greying population trend
The Control Yuan (CY) held the 2017 Seniors’ Human Rights Seminar on 29 September, two days ahead of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. Government officials, expert scholars and leading professionals were invited to take part for discussions on issues related to human rights for the elderly.

Ce vendredi 20 octobre 2017, le Médiateur, Marc BERTRAND, entouré de ses collègues médiateurs fédéraux, flamand, de la Communauté germanophone et des Pensions, a participé à une rencontre avec le Parlement BENELUX. A cette occasion, le Président, M. André POSTEMA, accompagné de la Vice-Présidente, Mme Maya DETIEGE et de la Secrétaire générale, Mme Christine BOGAERT, ont souhaité cette année encore, inviter les Ombudsmans et Médiateurs pour avoir un échange de vue et un aperçu des problèmes transfrontaliers.

Torturas en la cárcel de Ezeiza: La Procuración Penitenciaria se presentó como querellante
El día 30 de marzo de 2015 en el Complejo Penitenciario I de Ezeiza una persona privada de la libertad habría sido torturada por dos agentes del Servicio Penitenciario Federal. La Procuración Penitenciaria de la Nación presentó una denuncia al respecto, la cual fue llevada adelante por la Fiscalía y la Procuraduría de Violencia Institucional (Procuvin).

Adv. Tlotliso Angelina Polaki appointed as Ombudsman
Adv. Tlotliso Angelina Polaki is the newly appointed Ombudsman of Lesotho, effective 6 June 2022. Adv. Tlotliso Polaki graduated from the National University of Lesotho and was appointed and served as a magistrate, at the Maseru Magistrate Court for a number of years. In June 2022, Adv. Tlotliso Polaki was appointed as the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Lesotho.

On 17 October 2017 the IOI Executive Committee (ExCom) held its first mid-term meeting by electronic means. In a videoconference the members of the Executive Committee discussed the progress of projects decided and approved by the IOI Board of Directors in Vienna in April 2017.

Emite CNDH recomendación por violencias graves a derechos humanos en los hechos de violencia occuridos en Nochixtlán
Emite CNDH recomendación al gobierno de Oaxaca, Fiscalía general del estado, Comisionado Nacional de Seguridad y Procurados General de la Repúblic, por violaciones graves a derechos humanos en los hechos de violencia ocurridos en Nochixtlán, Oaxaca, el pasado 16 de junio de 2016. El operativo para liberar vialidades no fue debidamente diseñado, preparado, coordinado y ejecutado, ni se observaron plenamente los protocolos de actuación, sobre todo por lo que hace al uso legítimo de la fuerza y la necesidad de priorizar mecanismos y técnicas no violentas antes de utilizar la fuerza contra la población.
