2011-11-03New Alberta Ombudsman sworn in
On October 18, 2011, Peter Hourihan was sworn in as Alberta’s eighth Ombudsman. Over the course of his 35 year career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Mr. Hourihan worked in a variety of policing roles, most recently serving as the Commanding Officer for the RCMP in British Columbia, responsible for federal, provincial and municipal police operations.

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) has published its Fundamental Rights Report 2019 and FRA´s opinion on the main developments in the thematic areas covered. The report reviews major developments in the field, identifying both achievements and remaining areas of concern.

2019-07-02Accessibility to the beach for Persons with Disabilities
Following an Own-Initiative Report of the Commissioner for Administration and the Protection of Human Rights regarding the accessibility of Persons with Disabilities to the Beaches, all the recommendations of the Report were implemented. In particular, the relevant legislation was amended, access ramps/passageways were built at beaches that did not have and/or the existing ones have been improved, while Seatrac and floating wheelchairs have been placed on other beaches that were not accessible from Persons with Disabilities.

Representatives from seven independent agencies had the opportunity to speak to, and hear from, Aboriginal Elders and service providers during information sessions held in Western Australia, the first in Perth on 13 May and the second in Mandurah on 14 May 2019.

The report highlights examples of NHRIs’ work to promote and protect migrants’ rights, including several practices from Europe.
