2021-05-03The Pandemic Changed Complaints Made to Saskatchewan’s Ombudsman in 2020
The 2020 annual reports for Saskatchewan’s Ombudsman and Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner, Mary McFadyen, were tabled in the Legislature today. While some complaints to her Office continued as usual, the pandemic affected others. Complaints about long-term care facilities and correctional centres increased, but complaints about Social Services, SGI and Crown utilities decreased. Twelve of the 41 contacts made to her Office under The Public Interest Disclosure Act were related to the pandemic.

In compliance with Section (1) of Act CXI of 2011 on the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, on 31 March 2021, the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights submitted his report to the Parliament on his activities in 2020. El Procurador del Común entrega al Presidente de las Cortes el Informe Anual correspondiente al año 2020, ejercicio en el que se tramitaron 6.342 expedientes
Un total de 1807 expedientes estuvieron referidos a la situación provocada por la Covid-19, en gran parte relacionados con la sanidad, la educación y las residencias de mayores. Se dictaron cerca de un millar de resoluciones, con un grado de aceptación del 78,68 % de las recomendaciones dirigidas a las Administraciones.

COVID issues feature in direct provision complaints to Ombudsman
Issues relating to COVID featured in many complaints to the Ombudsman in 2020 from people in direct provision. Complaints about the movement of people from existing accommodation, the transfer of people to self-isolate in the Citywest complex, and allegations that staff within direct provision centres were not ensuring compliance with public health guidelines were among the complaints dealt with by the Ombudsman.
