2023-07-27Ombudsman publishes special report on return of third country nationals in 2022
In its special report, the Office of the Greek Ombudsman stated, that forced returns of third country nationals to their countries of origin are further reduced in 2022, however, the number of detainees in Pre-removal Centres and Police stations is disproportionately high. At the same time, complaints on illegal pushbacks are rising, reinforcing the EU Commission's proposal to member-states to establish independent border monitoring mechanisms.

On 22 and 23 September 2025, the ombuds institutions of the Benelux countries gathered in Brussels for their annual meeting to discuss key regional issues. During the meeting, the group welcomed two new ombudsmen: Claudine Konsbruck, the Ombudsman of Luxembourg, and Nicolas Lagasse, the new Médiateur de la Wallonie et de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.

2023-12-07Tranquilisers instead of individual support: even such cases are encountered during the Defender’s visits to residential facilities for people with disabilities
The stories of two men with mental disabilities, recorded by employees of the Defender’s Office during their visits, illustrate a phenomenon, which has mostly been overlooked so far: some people with mental disabilities, especially those with challenging behaviour, receive high doses of tranquilisers. According to the Deputy Defender, this practice has to change. Behaviour is often the only possible form of communication for people who cannot otherwise make contact with others. It is therefore necessary that the latter understand the unmet needs behind the patient’s challenging behaviour and be able to respond accordingly. Tranquillisers must not be the first, let alone the only and permanent “solution”.

Toronto’s Ombudsman says the City clearly has more work to do to ensure it serves people fairly. In his 2022 Annual Report released on 25 April 2023, Kwame Addo cites the record increase in complaints to his office, noting that "whether it was through unclear communication, inaccessible services, or inconsistent decision making, the City was not always putting the public first.”

2025-07-03Ombudsman Sindh launches collaborative outreach initiative with UN agencies and civil society
Mr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput, Provincial Ombudsman Sindh, chaired a high-level meeting attended by representatives of prominent UN agencies, foreign and local NGOs, community based organizations, local support organizations, and civil society organizations to formally launch the “Awareness and Outreach Program - A Collaborative Initiative.” This initiative is aimed at strengthening public awareness of citizens’ rights, promoting transparency and accountability, and enhancing the visibility and accessibility of grievance redress mechanisms across Sindh.

2022-10-27Alberta Ombudsman and Public Interest Commissioner welcomed distinguished guests from Nigeria
The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions of the Republic of Nigeria paid an official visit to the Alberta Legislative Assembly and the office of the Alberta Ombudsman. The one-week visit was initiated by the Chairman of the Senate Committee, and leader of the delegation, Senator (Dr.) Patrick Ayo Akinyelure, with a view to fostering relations and collaboration.
