PDHJ hosted 2nd Technical Working Group of the South East Asian NHRIs Forum
The office of the Provedor for Human Rights and Justice of Timor-Leste hosted the 2nd Techincal Working Group Meeting of the South East Asia National Human Right Institutions Forum (SEANF) from 23 - 25 July 2019. SEANF is a Forum of National Human Rights Institutions from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Timor-Leste.

El Síndic de Greuges de Cataluña abre una actuación de oficio para garantizar la retirada de un vertedero ilegal
El Síndic se ha dirigido al Ayuntamiento de Tossa de Mar, a la Agencia de Residuos de Cataluña y a la Dirección general de los Agentes Rurales. En el año 2016 ya actuó de oficio al conocer la existencia de diecinueve vertidos incontrolados en la demarcación de Barcelona, con gran éxito.

New Alberta Ombudsman sworn in
On October 18, 2011, Peter Hourihan was sworn in as Alberta’s eighth Ombudsman. Over the course of his 35 year career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Mr. Hourihan worked in a variety of policing roles, most recently serving as the Commanding Officer for the RCMP in British Columbia, responsible for federal, provincial and municipal police operations.

Ombudsman reports on implementation of UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
In 2017, the Greek State enacted a mechanism for the external, independent monitoring of the implementation of the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities and assigned this responsibility, which it proclaimed a “promotional framework”, to the constitutionally-established Independent Authority of the Greek Ombudsman.

Migration et Médiation Institutionnelle : Quel rôle pour le Médiateur de l’espace UEMOA ?
L’Association des Médiateurs des Pays Membres de l’Union Economique et Monétaire Ouest Africaine (AMP-UEMOA) tenait du 29 juillet au 31 juillet 2019 une conférence internationale à Niamey portant sur le thème « Migration et Médiation Institutionnelle : Quel rôle pour le Médiateur de l’espace UEMOA ? ». C’est le 1er Ministre Chef du Gouvernement, SEM Brigi Rafini qui a présidé la cérémonie d’ouverture.

Investigación sobre huevos contaminados por insecticidas
En agosto de 2017 se destapó en Europa el caso de huevos contaminados por un insecticida de uso ilegal, el Fipronil. En Taiwán se detectaron también huevos contaminados en inspecciónes realizadas por el Consejo de Agricultura del Yuan Ejecutivo (YE). 45 granjas avícolas presentaban altos niveles de Fipronil, amenazando la seguridad alimentaria y causando pánico entre los consumidores.

Investigation leads to rise in number of employed people with physical or mental disabilities
The Control Yuan carried out an investigation to ensure that the employment rights of people with physical and/or mental health conditions were being upheld. The investigation and follow-up monitoring resulted in improvements in the overall situation.

Constitutional Court bans automatic licence plate recognition
Acting on a petition by the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia has annulled legislation which allowed police to use systems for automatic license plate recognition (ANPR). The said legislation, such as it was, contravened the constitutional right to protection of personal data. The now-annulled provisions were introduced into the Police Tasks And Powers Act in February 2017 and the Ombudsman filed the said constitutional challenge of legislation in question later that same year.

Ombudsman fights for the improvement in publication of court decisions
Public access to court case-law contributes to predictable decision-making by the courts, unification of the decision-making practice and transparency of court decisions, and thus also to promotion of the right to a fair trial. The Ministry of Justice has to provide for proper functioning of online records of court case-law.
