    Ontario Ombudsman’s advanced investigative training course welcomes participants from around the world

    This year, the Ontario Ombudsman’s annual investigative training course, “Sharpening Your Teeth” (SYT) was held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from the 5th to the 7th of November 2018. Senior Ombudsman staff have trained hundreds of ombudsmen, investigators and other watchdog staff at this Toronto course and at customized, on-site SYT courses throughout the world – most recently in Manitoba, Canada; The Hague, Netherlands; and Anchorage, Alaska.

    The effect of communication and disinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Ombudsman welcomes Commission’s constructive response to GDPR inquiry findings

    The European Commission will strengthen its monitoring of the implementation of the EU’s data protection law. This comes after the Irish Council for Civil Liberties complained that the Commission was not collecting sufficient information to be able to properly assess the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Ireland.

    Ombudsman investigation into operational arrangements for statutory visits under Justices of the Peace Visit Programme

    Ombudsman Winnie Chiu announced the completion of the direct investigation into the operational arrangements for statutory visits under the Justices of the Peace Visit Programme (“JP Visit Programme”). The Ombudsman made 13 recommendations for improvement to the Administration Wing, the Correctional Services Department, the Immigration Department, the Hospital Authority, and the Social Welfare Department.

    Ombudsman from Lithuania and Ukraine visited conflict zone in Eastern Ukraine

    The Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas and the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova conducted a joint humanitarian monitoring mission to Donetsk and Luhansk regions on 8-9 November 2018 with an aim to observe and assess the human rights situation therein.

    Family violence report released

    The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI), part of the Office of the Ombudsman of Samoa, has completed its public inquiry into family violence, its first national inquiry. Headed by Samoan Ombudsman Maiava Iulai Toma, the inquiry commissioners began work on the report in late 2016, and it was publicly released in September 2018.

    4th IOI Workshop for NPMs hosted in Copenhagen

    The 4th IOI Workshop for NPMs took place in Copenhagen from 7 – 9 November 2018. The training event was generously hosted by the Office of the Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman and facilitated by the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT). It brought 35 participants from 23 different countries together to discuss the topic of an effective follow-up process to NPM recommendations.

    The Federal Ombudsman Office has extended its services to merged districts of former Tribal Agencies and opened its two offices, one in Sadda district Kurrum and another at Wana South Waziristan, to provide speedy relief and justice in those areas.
