    International Data Protection Day 2021: It’s your right!

    On Thursday, 28 January the Cayman Islands joins the rest of the world in marking International Data Protection Day. Cayman’s Data Protection Law (DPL) contains important rights for individuals, including the right to be informed about how personal data is being used. The Office of the Ombudsman is tasked with oversight and enforcement of the DPL. Individuals have the right to complain to the Ombudsman if they believe their data is not being processed legally or fairly.

    CDNS (National Savings) digitized all saving centers under Ombudsman’s instructions

    The Federal Ombudsman Syed Tahir Shahbaz by taking cognizance of the difficulties of senior citizens and widows has directed Director General National Savings (CDNS) to facilitate senior citizens, widows and pensioners as per banking standards.  He was chairing a high level meeting to review the progress on CDNS Reforms Report issued by the Wafaqi Mohtasib Secretariat(WMS).

    Parliamentary Ombudsman nominates new Secretary General

    Parliamentary Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen has nominated Committee Counsel Matti Marttunen, Doctor of Laws and Master of Laws trained on the bench, as Secretary General of the Office of the Parliamentary Ombudsman. Marttunen will take office on 1 March 2021.

    Public Defender’s special statement on situation in penitentiary establishments

    In 2020, the Public Defender of Georgia published a special report, in which she talked about the fact that the management model of semi-open establishments was based on informal hierarchy of prisoners, where the so-called "prison watchers" provide fictitious order, which aims to silence prisoners and prevent them from talking about their problems. The publication of this report was followed by public attacks on the Public Defender and illegal actions by the Minister of Justice and the Penitentiary Service. As a result, it has becomedangerous for the representatives of the Public Defender's Office to carry out visits and monitoring at the penitentiary establishments.

    Provincial Ombudsman Sindh orders payment of financial assistance for widow

    On orders of the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh (Pakistan), the Education & Vocational Training Authority of the Government of Sindh paid financial assistance amounting to Rs. 1,200,00/-. The complainant appreciated the role of the Ombudsman for taking prompt action and providing speedy justice.

    Public Defender calls on a public school to avoid gender-based discrimination

    On 28 February 2024, the Public Defender addressed the director of one of the public schools of the Khelvachauri municipality with a general proposal relating to the case of incitement to discrimination on the basis of sex/gender and called on him to not allow discriminatory treatment on the basis of sex or other grounds at school and to implement a policy of equality, and in relation to the school uniform, to ensure students' freedom of choice.
