Celebrating 15 Years of Fairness, Looking Forward
Toronto’s Ombudsman says 2024 marks 15 years of success for his office in solving problems with City services for the people of Toronto. In his annual report released on 21 June 2024, Ombudsman Kwame Addo notes that to date, the office has handled more than 31,000 individual complaints from members of the public.

The Ombudsman of Sint Maarten recently published the 2023-year report. In 2023 there were a total of 367 complaints handled of which 43 resulted in a report by the Ombudsman.

Ombudsman for Children expresses despair at situation facing children in care
On Monday, 8 July 2024, the Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, expressed his despair at the last volume of case reports published by the Child Law Project. He has also expressed serious concern about the fact that the Child Law Project has not been re-commissioned, and fears that this indicates the shutting down of open communication between the courts and the public in relation to children in care.

2023 Annual Report of the CCAC of Macao published in Official Gazette
The 2023 Annual Report of the Commission Against Corruption of Macao was published in the Official Gazette of the Macao Special Administrative Region on 12 June 2024. According to the report, the CCAC proactively seized the opportunities in the wake of the revival after the epidemic and sought improvement in corruption fighting, ombudsman actions and promotion and education.

Malawi Parliament passes Ombudsman (Amendment) Bill
On 7 December 2023, the Malawi Parliament passed the Ombudsman (Amendment) Bill 2023 after close to one and half hours of scrutiny. This bill seeks to amend the Ombudsman Act (Cap. 3:07) in order to clarify and strengthen the legal framework of the jurisdiction and mandate of the Ombudsman.

Deputy Ombudsman in National Assembly on the position of older people from the findings of the institution of the Ombudsman
On 24 January 2024, Deputy Ombudsman, Dr Dijana Možina Zupanc, participated in a meeting of the Committee on Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Disability, at which the issue of older people, primarily in retirement homes was discussed. She presented the basic findings recorded by the institution of the Ombudsman while considering complaints connected to older people, about which it also warns the competent authorities and reports to the National Assembly.

CHRAJ issues advisory on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment
Due to recent media reports of alleged tortuture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment meted out to two journalists, CHRAJ found it appropriate to issue an Advisory in accordance with the Paris Principles which vest National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) with general responsibility to advise Government, Parliament and other authorities by giving and issuing “opinions, recommendations, proposals and reports”.

Civil Aviation Authority’s decision-making on New Zealand Sign Language in airline safety briefing videos unreasonable
The Chief Ombudsman has found that the Civil Aviation Authority’s decision-making processes were unreasonable when it decided not to amend the rules to include New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) in airline safety briefing videos. Peter Boshier began investigating after receiving a complaint from Deaf Action NZ about the response the CAA gave to its 2018 petition, calling for NZSL to be included.
