2011-09-16Ombudsman welcomes consultation act for indigenous peoples
Ombudsman Eduardo Vega expressed his satisfaction and welcomes the decision of the Congress to adopt the Law on Consultation of the Indigenous Peoples on 23 August 2011. Vega called the act “a provision which constitutes a seminal step for the recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples and for institutionalising the intercultural dialogue between them and the authorities”.

Defensoría del Pueblo saluda aprobación de ley de consulta a los pueblos indígenas
El Defensor del Pueblo en funciones, Eduardo Vega, expresó su satisfacción y saludó la decisión del Pleno del Congreso de la República, que hoy aprobó la Ley de Consulta a los Pueblos Indígenas, a la que calificó como “una norma que constituye un paso trascendental en el reconocimiento de los derechos de los pueblos indígenas y para institucionalizar el diálogo intercultural entre éstos y las autoridades del Estado”. Asimismo, indicó que tal medida acoge las recomendaciones efectuadas por la Defensoría del Pueblo.

Conferencia de prensa sobre la situación actual de las cárceles federales
Con la finalidad de informar acerca del trabajo institucional que se halla plasmado en el último Informe Anual 2018, el cual se presenta anualmente al poder legislativo nacional, el titular de la Procuración Penitenciaria analizó la situación actual de las cárceles federales. En cumplimiento de la ley 25.875, Francisco Mugnolo, aseguró que se recibió un total de 51.989 demandas de la población reclusa durante el año pasado.

Ombudsman publishes Annual Report 2018
In 2018, the Ombudsman's Office received a total of 48,129 requests through the various channels available to citizens, including 36,111 entries of complaints and other communications. During the year, 9338 new procedures were instituted, five of them from the Ombudsman's initiative, which translates into an increase in the handling of complaints of 20% over the previous year.

New South Wales Ombudsman reports on the need of a boarding house reform
On 16 August 2011, the NSW Ombudsman tabled a special report to Parliament titled More than board and lodging: the need for boarding house reform. The report draws on extensive work by the Ombudsman´s office since 2002, which has identified serious concerns about the safety, health, welfare and rights of the residents of licensed boarding houses, and the adequacy of the system that is meant to protect them.

The 10th Biennial Caribbean Ombudsman Association (CAROA) Conference concluded on Wednesday at the Fairmont Southampton Resort in Bermuda. Commissioner for Fundamental Rights’ view on the effect of a local government decree
The local government ordered a ban on changes on recently purchased, undeveloped land. However, the same ban does not apply to the adjacent plot in local government ownership. During his inquiry the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights established that a ban imposed in such a manner runs counter to the requirement of equal rights stipulated by the Fundamental Law of Hungary.

Ombudsman marks Children's Day
The promotion and defense of the rights of the child are fundamental tasks of the State and of the community, being assumed not only as ethical duties, but also as obligations that have already reached the juridical level, based on national and international instruments. Therefore, celebrating the day of the child implies to affirm its singularity as a holder of autonomous rights, specifically recognized to meet the special needs demanded by the different stages of development of childhood and adolescence.
