A village resident was concerned about the condition of the trees on the government land nearby, particularly a large tree adjacent to his house, which had grown taller and taller with its trunk leaning more significantly. The Ombudsman’s Office sympathised with his long-standing concern, given that tree collapse had caused casualties time and time again in the past.

On September 27, the Palácio de Vilalva in Lisbon hosted the conference “Five Decades of Freedom and Justice: Celebrating 50 Years of the Ombudsman and April 25”. The event, organized by the Ombudsman’s Office, marked the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of this institution in Portugal.

As Secretary General of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI), the Austrian Ombudsman Werner Amon met the President of the Ibero-American Federation (FIO), Pablo Ulloa, who has also been the Ombudsman of the Dominican Republic since 2021. The meeting took place in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic in February 2022. The topics of the discussion were a potential membership of the Dominican Republic in the IOI and closer cooperation betwe en the FIO and the IOI.

2017-10-12Ombudsman publishes results of investigation on unjust and oppressive separation of prisoner
During an investigation concerning the separation of a prisoner from the general population for 66 days, the Ombudsman South Australia found that the Department of Correctional Services had, first, failed to document confidential intelligence and an operational risk assessment to justify its decision. Second, the Department's direction that a prisoner be kept separately and apart from other prisoners was unjust and oppressive. The Ombudsman is concerned that the Department has indicated that it may not implement some of his recommendations.

An investigation conducted by Control Yuan has found that after the end of Taiwan’s neritic squid fishing season in September 2023, employers and agents flexibly adjusted fishing manpower using “consensual termination of contract” to avoid requirements of the Labor Standards Act. As a result, 64 foreign fishermen were forced to take unpaid leave, denied the three-year guarantee of work in their contracts, and not given severance pay.
