IOI Board Meeting held in Toronto, Ontario
The annual IOI Board Meeting was held from 1 – 4 May 2018 in Toronto, Canada, paying tribute to the country in which the IOI was established 40 years ago. Paul Dubé, IOI Regional President for North America and Ombudsman of Ontario, and his office generously hosted the event.

The Milli Mejlis adopted annual report of Ombudsman
The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmira Suleymanova presented an annual report for 2017 to the Country Parliament on April 24. The 2017 Annual Report was prepared on the basis of appeals, petitions, proposals and complaints; different cases, problems and challenges disclosed during the visits of the Commissioner and staff members of the Office to penitenciaries, among other places, meetings with the population in regions and investigations carried out there; as well as official responses and attitudes of state agencies and authorities.

Chris Field, President of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) and Western Australian Ombudsman, appointed Mr Laurence Riley as Assistant Ombudsman Aboriginal Engagement and Collaboration in the Office of the Ombudsman of Western Australia.

El Yuan de Control concede gran importancia a la reconstrucción de Hualien y Taitung tras el terremoto ocurrido antes del Año Nuevo Chino en febrero de 2018, por lo que envió 4 miembros del Comité de Supervisiones para realizar una visita de inspección del 29 a 31 de marzo, a fin de conocer la situación de los refugios para los damnificados y la reconstrucción del Condado de Hualien, además de revisar las obras del Gobiernos del Condado de Taitung.

Victorian Ombudsman tells Council to ease up on treatment of vulnerable people over parking fines
Maribyrnong City Council has treated disadvantaged people harshly by refusing to cancel parking fines in cases where exceptional circumstances justified cancellation, the Victorian Ombudsman has found. Ombudsman Deborah Glass said the council’s practices were lacking in fairness and discretion when compared with five other metropolitan councils.

40th Anniversary celebrations start with side event at UN headquarters in New York
On 30 April 2018 the IOI organized a side event at the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York to mark the 40th anniversary of its establishment in 1978. The event provided a platform for exchange between the United Nations and the Ombudsman community, as well as the perfect setting for the launch of the IOI’s most recent publication on “A Mission to Justice – The International Ombudsman Institute 1978-2018”.

Signature d’un Mémorandum d’Entente entre l’Institution du Médiateur du Royaume et le Commissaire aux Droits de l’Homme d’Azerbaïdjan
M. Mohamed BENALILOU, le Médiateur du Royaume, a signé le mercredi 19 octobre 2022, un Mémorandum d’Entente avec Mme Sabina ALYEVA, Commissaire aux droits de l’Homme (l’Ombudsman) à la République d’Azerbaïdjan, en parallèle avec les travaux de la conférence internationale organisée à Bakou relative à la période du 19 et 20 octobre 2022 à propos du rôle des institutions d’ombudsmans et des institutions nationales des droits de l’Homme à protéger les droits socio-économiques.
