    Over 7,000 complaints received by Parliamentary Ombudsman

    In 2025, the Parliamentary Ombudsman received a total of 7,321 complaints. This is the second largest number of complaints of all time. Case numbers rose in nearly all administrative branches. The largest numbers of complaints concerned social services, the administrative branch of the police and healthcare. The number of cases concerning foreign nationals more than tripled from the previous year. More than half of them concerned delays in processing at the Finnish Immigration Service.

    Newly elected Human Rights Ombudswoman in Slovenia

    At its session on 3 February 2026, the members of the National Assembly elected Dr. Simona Drenik Bavdek as the new Human Rights Ombudswoman. She will also advocate for the establishment of a children's rights ombudsman in Slovenia, who would be able to operate autonomously within the Ombudsman's institution.

    Ombud’s 2023/2024 annual report highlights fairness in times of disaster

    The Ombud’s 2023/2024 Annual Report was released by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly on 9 May 2024. In it, Ombud Colette Langlois highlighted the increased attention ombuds are devoting to fairness issues related to climate change and natural disasters. The Ombud also reported a 45% increase in the number of inquiries to her Office over the previous fiscal year.

    On 4 June 2024, the Office of the Public Protector released a report on the investigations into administrative deficiencies relating to the processing of gender-based violence (GBV) related matters within the South African criminal justice system. The investigation emanates from the administrative challenges faced by the public, particularly women and children, in the South African criminal justice system identified by the Public Protector.

    Ombudsman addresses European Roundtable on AI and Human Rights

    The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon, was invited by the Malta Chamber, the Malta Business Bureau and the General Workers Union to speak at the European Roundtable Discussion held on 30 September 2025 at the Malta Chamber in Valletta. The event formed part of the EU-funded TransFormWork 2 project, which explores the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace and promotes a fair and human-centred transition towards digitalisation. The project brings together European social partners to develop common guidelines on the responsible use of AI while safeguarding fundamental rights.

    Tabling of the 2023–2024 annual report : Toward full implementation of the modernized Official Languages Act

    On 7 May 2024, the Commissioner of Official Languages of Canada, Raymond Théberge, tabled his 2023–2024 annual report in Parliament. The modernization of the Official Languages Act in June 2023 marked the beginning of a new chapter not only in the history of official languages, but also in the history of the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages.

    Prisons in Brazil: Report points out Human Rights violations in the federal capital after anti-democratic attacks

    The Federal Public Defenders' Office (DPU), the Federal District Public Defenders' Office (DPDF) and the National Mechanism for the Prevention and Combat of Torture (MNPCT) published its report pointing out the human rights situation in Brazilian prisons after the arrest of people participating in anti-democratic attacks.

    Malawi Ombudsman staff take the Oath of Secrecy

    On 7 August 2023, the Office of the Ombudsman administered the Oath of Secrecy to 40 of its members of staff and interns. The Director of Legal Services and Advisory, Chipiliro Mangulama, said the ceremony is in line with Section 10 of The Ombudsman Act, which stipulates the need for officers in the office of the Ombudsman to treat with utmost confidentiality any information made available to them in the course of their work.

    UNICEF's chief of child protection program, Ms. Daniela Luciani, called on Ombudsman Punjab Major (R) Azam Suleman Khan at his office and discussed matters relating to the protection of children's rights. Chief Provincial Commissioner for Children of Ombudsman Office, Mrs. Tabana Sajjad Naseer, and Child Protection Officer Zahida Manzoor were also present.

    Ombudsman trains 68 Hospital Ombudsman

    The Office of the Ombudsman has trained 68 Hospital Ombudsman from 34 health facilities in Salima and Rumphi districts. The trainings, according to Deputy Director for Investigations and Research, Temwa Mughogho, and Chief Investigations and Research Officer in the Northern Region, Mrs. Elleanor Kabisala, were aimed at empowering the Hospital Ombudsman with necessary skills and knowledge on how to handle patient complaints.

    Ombudsman for Bermuda Annual Report 2024 Tabled

    Michael DeSilva, the Ombudsman for Bermuda, has submitted his Annual Report for 2024 to the Speaker of the House of Assembly in accordance with his statutory duty under the Ombudsman Act 2004. The report was tabled in the House of Assembly on 27 June 2025 and it is now available to the public.

    A growing number of agencies complying with the NSW Public Interest Disclosures Act 2022 but more needs to be done

    The NSW Ombudsman tabled the Public Interest Disclosures (PID) Act 2022: Agency self-assessment audit report 2025 in the Parliament of NSW on 11 December 2025. Following commencement of the PID Act in 2023, the institution conducted self-assessment audits in both 2024 and 2025 to test agency compliance with certain key requirements of the PID Act. This report details important findings from these audits.

    Ontario Ombudsman André Marin called on the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services to crack the pervasive “code of silence” under which some guards in the province’s correctional institutions use excessive force against inmates and conspire to cover it up.
