The Seimas Ombudsman’s Office – the National Human Rights Institution – has submitted its Activity Report of 2020 to the Seimas highlighting human rights concerns of the last year. The COVID-19 pandemic, which shook the world in 2020, also impacted the activities of the Seimas Ombudsman, who repeatedly noted that during the pandemic it was especially important to ensure that residents of care homes and convicts had the opportunity to keep in touch with their family members. In other cases, when it was established that certain rights of individuals were violated due to the conditions of the pandemic, own-initiative investigations were started.

Ombudsman discusses freedom of the media and rule of law in Slovenia
On 26 March 2021, the Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group of the European Parliament which operates in the framework of the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs continued the discussion on the freedom of the media and the rule of law in Slovenia. Ombudsman Peter Svetina has accepted the invitation of the Group, headed by the Dutch MP Sophie in 't Veld, and participated in the second round of discussions in Brussels.

Ombudsman Hong Kong announces results of investigation into Government’s handling of misconnection of private building sewers to stormwater collection systems
On March 29, the Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, announced the completion of a direct investigation into the Government’s handling of misconnection of private building sewers to the stormwater collection system (referred to as “sewer misconnection”) and has made eight recommendations for improvement having regard to the inadequacies found on the part of the Buildings Department (BD) and the Environmental Protection Department (EPD).

Un centro penitenciario con estructuras deterioradas, con un 24.5% de la población en estado de hacinamiento, con acceso limitado a los servicios de salud, en donde el 17.06% de las internas padece de alguna enfermedad crónica, son algunos de los hallazgos que revela un informe elaborado por la Defensoría del Pueblo y el Mecanismo Nacional Para la Prevención de la Tortura y Otros Tratos o Penas Crueles Inhumanos o Degradante (MNPT), luego de una inspección realizada al Centro Femenino de Rehabilitación Doña Cecilia Orillac de Chiari. Tena Šimonović Einwalter Appointed as the new Ombudswoman of the Republic of Croatia
