    Taxpayers' Ombudsperson releases 2023–2024 Annual Report

    Canada’s Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson, Mr. François Boileau, released his annual report, Fair Access to Service, which was tabled on 8 October 2024 in the House of Commons by Ms. Iqra Khalid, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue. The report provides an overview of the activities of the Office of the Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024.

    Celebrating the Success of the International Ombud Expo 2024

    The 2nd International Ombud Expo (IOE) 2024 concluded on a high note, reaffirming the crucial role of Ombud institutions in strengthening governance, upholding human rights, and ensuring good public administration. Hosted in Gaborone, Botswana, from July 29 to August 2, 2024, the event brought together 541 delegates, including Ombud offices, human rights bodies, grievance handlers, and integrity organisations from over 100 countries. The participation of the AOMA Secretariat AORC and of some institutions, which could not afford exhibition stalls and have their accommodation subsidised, received financial support of the IOI including through its regional subsidy programme.

    Despite their importance, whistleblowers are often treated by society in an ambivalent manner. There are a number of reasons for protecting whistleblowers; first and foremost to ensure the proper functioning of the public systems acting for the benefit of the public. The next publication in the series of IOI Best Practice Papers was developed by the Office of the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel and is based on the immense experience acquired by the Office.

    International Ombudsman Summit 2024 and Hong Kong Ombudsman 35th Anniversary Reception

    The year 2024 marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Office of The Ombudsman, Hong Kong, China. To commemorate this important milestone, the institution will be hosting for the first time an International Ombudsman Summit with the theme "Ombudsman in a Changing World: Learning from the Past; Preparing for the Future" on 3 December 2024 in the Hong Kong Palace Museum.     Ombudsman conducted Mobile Accountability Clinics in Zomba district

    In an effort to strengthen transparency and accountability mechanisms at grassroots level the Office of the Ombudsman conducted Mobile Accountability Clinics in Zomba District for two weeks. Through the mobile clinics platform, the Office takes its services to the communities to sensitize and empower people to identify and report suspected acts of Maladministration that are perpetrating injustices.

    Colonel (Ret’d) Nishika Jardine reappointed as Veterans Ombud

    The Honourable Jill McKnight, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, is pleased to re-appoint Colonel (Ret’d) Nishika Jardine to the role of Veterans Ombud. The re-appointment is for a period of three years and is effective 23 November 2025.

    Direct investigation operation into Government’s work on landslide prevention and mitigation and management of government slopes completed

    On 8 January 2026, the Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, announced the completion of a direct investigation operation into the work of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on landslide prevention and mitigation as well as management of government slopes, with 32 major recommendations for improvements made to the Civil Engineering and Development Department, the Lands Department, the Highways Department, the Water Supplies Department and the Architectural Services Department.

    Ombudsman Assistance Center now open in Pasay City

    The Office of the Ombudsman opened its third Ombudsman Assistance Center (OAC) at the DoubleDragon Plaza in Pasay City on 22 August 2024. Intended to cater to walk-in clients for the filing of complaints and Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth including the processing of Ombudsman clearance, the OAC is designed to provide responsive and streamlined frontline services.

Collaborating with other institutions, the DPU seeks a wide range of out-of-court solutions.

    Ombudsman engages Government on farm input subsidy investigation findings

    The Office of the Ombudsman has presented to the Ministry of Agriculture, preliminary findings of its Systemic Investigation on the Implementation of the Affordable Inputs Programme for the 2022/23 and 2023/2024 growing seasons. Ombudsman Grace Malera led a team from her Office to interface with Agriculture Minister Sam Kawale, Ministry Officials and others from the Smallholder Fertilizer Revolving Fund of Malawi.
