2021-04-29Ombudsman submits National Ordinances regarding cuts to employment benefits to the Constitutional Court for review
On April 26th, 2021 the Ombudsman of Sint Maarten, Gwendolien Mossel, after careful consideration, submitted the three national ordinances, in connection with cuts to the employment benefits of all (semi) public sector workers, to the Constitutional Court for review. The three national ordinances are: the Temporary National Ordinance Covid-19 cuts, Temporary National Ordinance to amend the terms of employment of political authorities and Temporary National Ordinance on the standardization of top incomes and adjustment of employment conditions at (semi-) public sector entities.

La Defensoría del Pueblo de Chaco recibió el informe de la Defensoría del Pueblo de la Nación, en donde se indica el compromiso del Ministerio de Desarrollo Social nacional para mejorar a partir de este mes las prestaciones de las tarjetas magnéticas otorgadas por la cartera, sumar productos en los módulos alimentarios e incrementar el envío de agua potable para las comunidades aborígenes chaqueñas, en el marco del cumplimiento de la medida cautelar dictada por la Corte Suprema de Justicia de la Nación.

Public service complaints to the Ombudsman rise by 11%
Complaints to the Ombudsman about public services rose by 11% to over 3,500 in 2014. Launching his annual report today (Wednesday 10 June) Ombudsman Peter Tyndall said the increase was mainly due to the additional 200 public bodies which came within his jurisdiction for a full year for the first time in 2014. These included bodies in the education sector such as the State Examinations Commission and Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI).

People’s Advocate Position With Regard To The Large Number Of Personal Data Of Albanian Citizens Compromised For Political Purposes
Given the concerns of a large number of citizens regarding allegations of the collection and use of their personal data by a political entity, specifically the Socialist Party of Albania, the Institution of the People's Advocate states that obtaining and using personal data of citizens by any political party is illegal, unless the citizens themselves have given a special written authorization for their use for the permitted purpose, or for other concrete cases provided by the legislation in force.

Técnicos del Defensor del Pueblo han visitado durante la semana del 11 al 17 de abril centros e instalaciones relacionados con la llegada irregular de personas migrantes en las islas de Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, El Hierro y Tenerife. Ya el pasado mes de noviembre la Institución realizó una exhaustiva supervisión de las instalaciones de recepción, detención y acogida de personas extranjeras.

The Bahrain Ombudsman, the first Independent Ombudsman in the Region, presents its second annual report. The Office investigates complaints against employees of the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) and has the important role of ensuring that prisoners and detainees are treated appropriately and are not subject to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.

Ombudsman opens investigation to promote transparency of "trilogues"
The European Ombudsman, Emily O'Reilly, has opened an investigation into the transparency of "trilogues" with a view to boosting transparent law-making in the EU. Trilogues are informal negotiations between the European Parliament (EP), the Council and the Commission aimed at reaching early agreements on new EU legislation.

Expulsion of special education needs student
In March Ombudsman Ron Paterson released an opinion under the Ombudsmen Act about an investigation into a decision by a school Board of Trustees to expel a high school student with Aspergers. Following an incident where the year 11 student had threatened to assault a teacher the Board had expelled him for “gross misconduct” that was “a harmful or dangerous example to other students”.

Ombudsman urges corporate culture overhaul, ongoing oversight of Hydro One
Reporting on the largest investigation in his office’s history – comprising more than 10,500 complaints – the Ombudsman revealed a litany of egregious problems with billing and customer service arising from Hydro One’s disastrous installation of a new customer information system in May 2013, which he estimates affected well over 100,000 customers.

Ombudsman oversight coming soon to municipalities, universities and school boards
The public will be able to complain to the Ontario Ombudsman about school boards as of September 1, 2015, and about municipalities and universities as of January 1, 2016, now that the dates have been proclaimed for the relevant sections of the Ombudsman Act, 1990, the Public Sector and MPP Accountability and Transparency Act is coming into force.
