2019-10-02Baltic-Nordic Ombudsman conference in Vilnius draws attention to importance of economic and social rights
On 26 September 2019, a Baltic-Nordic ombudsman conference "Ensuring social and economic rights is a safeguard of a dignified life" took place at the National Library of Lithuania. At the opening of the conference, the Head of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office of Lithuania greeted the ombudsmen from the Baltic and Nordic countries, the Chairman of the Committee on Human Rights of Lithuanian Parliament and welcomed the fact that conference discussions on protection and improvement of human rights and freedoms can be held in the Baltic-Nordic framework.

2019-10-02Queensland Ombudsman presents Annual Report 2018-19
The Office of the Queensland Ombudsman of Australia continues to contribute strongly to fair and accountable public administration in Queensland. The recently released annual report for 2018-19 highlights its role in assessing and investigating complaints. The Office finalised 7,831 complaints and completed 1,255 investigations. Of these, 192 investigations resulted in the rectification of an issue, which is where the Ombudsman recommends an agency change a decision or action as a result of a complaint.

2019-10-02First Federal Ombudsman of Belgium passed away
It is with deep sadness that the IOI has learned that Mr Herman Wuyts, first Federal Ombudsman of Belgium, passed away on 27 September 2019. Mr Wuyts held the position as Regional Vice-President of the IOI’s European Region from 2000-2004. He was an esteemed colleague and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends in this difficult time.

From 30 August to 8 September 2019 Chief Ombudsman of Thailand and IOI Treasurer Mr. Viddhavat Rajatanun led a delegation consisting of Ombudsman Boon Tapanadul, Ombudsman Somsak Suwansujarit, Secretary-General Raksagecha Chaechai, and staff from the office of the Ombudsman Thailand (OMT), to Perth, Western Australia and Wellington New Zealand.

The Ombudsman participated on September 20 at the 42nd Session of the Human Rights Council - which took place in Geneva from 9 to 27 - where the report of the Universal Periodic Examination of Human Rights to Portugal was discussed and adopted.

2019-09-24Ombudsman South Australia declares the use of „spit hoods“ in juvenile detention centers unlawful
The application of ‘spit hoods’ to children and young people accommodated in South Australia’s youth detention centre is contrary to the Charter of Rights for youth detainees and contrary to law, South Australian Ombudsman Wayne Lines has determined. Tabling his investigation report in South Australian Parliament on 24 September 2019, Mr Lines called on the South Australian government to ban the use of spit hoods within the Adelaide Youth Training Centre within 12 months.

Victoria’s workers compensation scheme has come under much scrutiny from the Victorian Ombudsman over the years, resulting in significant reforms. But the latest report "WorkSafe 3: Investigation into Victorian self-insurers’ claims management and WorkSafe oversight" highlights the shortcomings of self-insurers - private companies that manage workers compensation themselves - which have not previously been scrutinised by the Ombudsman.

2019-09-23Ombudsman recommends the ratification of the Lanzarote and Istanbul Convention
The Azerbaijani Ombudsman participated in the Council of Europe (CoE) High-level conference “Our Rights, Our Freedoms and Our Europe” in Baku city on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the organization. As a key-note speaker, the Ombudsman noted many significant reforms in the field of human rights made in the country. It furthermore recommended the country to ratify the Lanzarote and Istanbul Conventions, as well as the European Social Charter.

2023-06-222022 Annual Report of the Parliamentary Ombudsman available in English
On 19 June 2023, the Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman published its Annual report 2022 in English. Among others, the report focuses on its monitoring visits to psychiatric wards and the use of force and various forms of non-statutory interventions towards psychiatric patients. It also contains an article on the 10th anniversary on the Ombudsman's Children's Division.
