Commonwealth Ombudsman Michael Manthorpe today released a report into Australia Post complaints regarding carding, Safe Drop and compensation. The report reviews the actions taken by Australia Post since the release of three earlier Ombudsman reports concerning these matters.

The Ombudsman, Ms Connie Lau, held a press conference on April 17 to announce the results of two direct investigations, namely “Water Supplies Department’s Maintenance of Government Water Mains and Risk Management” and “Government Departments’ Handling of the Problem of Air-conditioner Dripping”.

Avoidable death of woman after multiple failings following routine hip operation
In December 2014, Mrs L went to a pre-operative assessment at the Trust ahead of her hip replacement surgery. Tests showed that she had high blood pressure and high levels of creatinine which indicated that her kidney function was impaired. A few days later, an anaesthetist checked these results and said that her hip operation could go ahead.

Ombudsman Nilda Arduin and Council of Advice member retired banker Jan Beaujon were appointed “informateurs” on Thursday by Governor Eugene Holiday. Arduin and Beaujon will research the possibilities for the formation of a new government for the country that is supported by the broadest possible majority in Parliament.

Acting New South Wales Ombudsman releases Child Death Review Team Annual Report 2016-17
The Acting Ombudsman and Convenor of the NSW Child Death Review Team (CDRT), Professor John McMillan AO, tabled the CDRT’s annual report for 2016-17. The work that the CDRT does is focused on one key outcome – to prevent the deaths of children. The report details the degree to which the CDRT’s recommendations to prevent or reduce the likelihood of child deaths have been accepted by government, and the progress being made by agencies to implement them.

Study visit by Sorbonne International Administration Student Association
On 11 December 2017 a group of the Sorbonne International Administration Student Association visited the headquarters of the International Ombudsman Institute in Vienna. The purpose of the visit was to gain an insight into the functioning of this global organization. IOI Secretary General Günther Kräuter answered the many questions this interested study group posed.

Ombudsman discusses findings of Magdalen Restorative Justice Scheme Investigation
An investigation carried out by Ombudsman Peter Tyndall in 2017 found that some women who worked in the Magdalen laundries in Ireland were wrongly refused access to the Magdalen Restorative Justice scheme. On Wednesday 31 January 2018 Ombudsman Peter Tyndall appeared before the Justice and Equality Committee of the Irish Parliament to discuss the findings of his report.
