On March 30, 2018, Nino Lomjaria, Public Defender of Georgia, submitted a report on the situation of human rights and freedoms in 2017 to the Parliament of Georgia.The report discusses the challenges and progress in the protection of human rights and freedoms enshrined in the constitution and names the state agencies and local self-governmental bodies that violated human rights and freedoms. The document also provides information about the implementation of the recommendations issued by the Public Defender.

2018-02-05Ombudsman discusses findings of Magdalen Restorative Justice Scheme Investigation
An investigation carried out by Ombudsman Peter Tyndall in 2017 found that some women who worked in the Magdalen laundries in Ireland were wrongly refused access to the Magdalen Restorative Justice scheme. On Wednesday 31 January 2018 Ombudsman Peter Tyndall appeared before the Justice and Equality Committee of the Irish Parliament to discuss the findings of his report.

The report is on four cases that the Commissioner for Health investigated and about which he is at an impasse with Department of Health for the last two years. One case concerns a Type 2 diabetic patient who had been prescribed Glargine Insulin by his Consultant Diabetologist. The Department’s policy is to give this type of insulin only to Type 1 patients, and, therefore, the patient was denied the treatment needed. There must be, of course, other patients with the same predicament.

2021-11-03Support for Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman UK
The UK Government has introduced new legislation, which would seriously impact on the powers of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO). On 18 October 2021, the Venice Commission issued an opinion on the possible exclusion of the PHSO as provided for by the Health and Care Bill. The International Ombudsman Institute strongly endorses the Venice Commission’s findings and also issues a statement or support for the UK colleague.
