The Pandemic Changed Complaints Made to Saskatchewan’s Ombudsman in 2020
The 2020 annual reports for Saskatchewan’s Ombudsman and Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner, Mary McFadyen, were tabled in the Legislature today. While some complaints to her Office continued as usual, the pandemic affected others. Complaints about long-term care facilities and correctional centres increased, but complaints about Social Services, SGI and Crown utilities decreased. Twelve of the 41 contacts made to her Office under The Public Interest Disclosure Act were related to the pandemic.

AOC Violates ICCPR by not Separating Defendants from Prisoners in Detention; CY Urges Improvement
In order to solve prison overcrowding, the Agency of Corrections (AOC) put accused persons, who are presumed innocent, in the branch prisons of non-prison correction agencies, leading to worse detention conditions than those of actual inmates and violating the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which states that untried persons should be separated from convicted detainees. Therefore, the CY has urged the AOC to review the situation and make improvements.

Ombudsman submits National Ordinances regarding cuts to employment benefits to the Constitutional Court for review
On April 26th, 2021 the Ombudsman of Sint Maarten, Gwendolien Mossel, after careful consideration, submitted the three national ordinances, in connection with cuts to the employment benefits of all (semi) public sector workers, to the Constitutional Court for review. The three national ordinances are: the Temporary National Ordinance Covid-19 cuts, Temporary National Ordinance to amend the terms of employment of political authorities and Temporary National Ordinance on the standardization of top incomes and adjustment of employment conditions at (semi-) public sector entities.

El Defensor del Pueblo reitera que las ayudas a la rehabilitación de vivienda habitual han de ser compatibles con el complemento a pensiones mínimas
La institución Defensor del Pueblo ha elevado a la ministra de Inclusión, Seguridad Social y Migraciones la recomendación para que se modifique la Ley General de la Seguridad Social, de modo que las subvenciones y ayudas destinadas a rehabilitación, mantenimiento o mejora de la vivienda habitual, que reciben particulares o comunidades de propietarios, no computen a efectos del límite de ingresos que se exige para la percepción del complemento a pensiones mínimas contributivas (jubilación, viudedad), así como otras prestaciones de Seguridad Social de naturaleza asistencial o no contributiva.

They may be angry, frustrated, or distressed; occasionally, they even may demonstrate threatening behaviour. Inmates at PEI’s Provincial Correctional Centre will have more access to telephone services following an inquiry into multiple complaints received by OmbudsPEI. PCC’s telephone policy will no longer limit inmates to a small list of approved telephone contacts.

El Síndic recomienda investigar la presencia de la extrema derecha en los cuerpos de seguridad
El pasado año en Alemania se publicó un informe que analizaba el alcance de la infiltración de la extrema derecha dentro de los servicios de seguridad del país. El Departamento de Interior ha aceptado la recomendación de elaborar un estudio similar respecto del cuerpo de PG-ME.
