Toronto Ombudsman Kwame Addo says Toronto Hydro acted unfairly by holding a property owner responsible for approximately $20,000 worth of repairs to a hydro vault it never told him he owned. Ombudsman Addo launched the investigation after receiving a complaint from Mr. A., who purchased a unit in a Toronto plaza in 1980.

2021-05-03The Pandemic Changed Complaints Made to Saskatchewan’s Ombudsman in 2020
The 2020 annual reports for Saskatchewan’s Ombudsman and Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner, Mary McFadyen, were tabled in the Legislature today. While some complaints to her Office continued as usual, the pandemic affected others. Complaints about long-term care facilities and correctional centres increased, but complaints about Social Services, SGI and Crown utilities decreased. Twelve of the 41 contacts made to her Office under The Public Interest Disclosure Act were related to the pandemic.

2021-04-30AOC Violates ICCPR by not Separating Defendants from Prisoners in Detention; CY Urges Improvement
In order to solve prison overcrowding, the Agency of Corrections (AOC) put accused persons, who are presumed innocent, in the branch prisons of non-prison correction agencies, leading to worse detention conditions than those of actual inmates and violating the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which states that untried persons should be separated from convicted detainees. Therefore, the CY has urged the AOC to review the situation and make improvements.

2021-04-29Ombudsman submits National Ordinances regarding cuts to employment benefits to the Constitutional Court for review
On April 26th, 2021 the Ombudsman of Sint Maarten, Gwendolien Mossel, after careful consideration, submitted the three national ordinances, in connection with cuts to the employment benefits of all (semi) public sector workers, to the Constitutional Court for review. The three national ordinances are: the Temporary National Ordinance Covid-19 cuts, Temporary National Ordinance to amend the terms of employment of political authorities and Temporary National Ordinance on the standardization of top incomes and adjustment of employment conditions at (semi-) public sector entities.
