2018-01-30New Commissioner of Official Languages takes office
Raymond Théberge took office as Commissioner of Official Languages on January 29, 2018. He has a PhD in linguistics from McGill University, a master’s degree in applied linguistics from the University of Ottawa and a bachelor’s degree in history from the Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface. He held a number of leadership positions before coming to the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages, and he has significant experience with official language minority communities. He also has extensive experience in academia and has worked across Canada.

Ombudsman working to improve services for asylum seekers
Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has published a commentary on his Office’s experience of dealing with complaints from refugees and asylum seekers living in direct provision centres. In ‘The Ombudsman & Direct Provision – The story so far’, the Ombudsman says that sometimes residents are reluctant to complain and some complaints arise as a result of cultural differences. As a result the Ombudsman’s office has worked with the Reception and Integration Agency, and residents and managers in 35 centres around the country to seek to improve services.

Igualmente, las personas tenemos la obligación de contribuir a esa protección y defensa de nuestro entorno. Para ello, la educación medioambiental es fundamental e indispensable y por lo tanto, el Síndic de Greuges de la Comunitat Valenciana informó al público sobre estos temas el día 26 de enero.

« Maisons Pirates » en Wallonie
Suite aux débats parlementaires qui ont suivi la parution d’un article dans un quotidien intitulé « 3 000 malades mentaux parqués dans des maisons pirates », l’absence de cadre juridique concernant l’existence et le fonctionnement des SHNA a été constatée. Plusieurs députés wallons ont introduit une proposition de décret relative à l’hébergement et à l’encadrement à durée indéterminée pour personnes en difficultés sociales.

Recomendación sobre el funcionamiento de los CRD
El Procurador Penitenciario de la Nación emitió el pasado 5 de enero la recomendación N° 873 dirigida al Director Nacional del Servicio Penitenciario Federal con el propósito de requerir que se implemente un abordaje integral de los consumos problemáticos en contextos de encierro, en el cual la conducción de los Centros de Rehabilitación de Drogadependientes (CRD) se encuentre en manos de profesionales de la salud mental.

Presentó CNDH ante la SCJN una acción de inconstitucionalidad
La Comisión Nacional de los Derechos Humanos (CNDH) presentó ante la Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación (SCJN) una acción de inconstitucionalidad contra distintos artículos de la Ley de Seguridad Interior (LSI) que generan la posibilidad de que se vulneren derechos humanos y libertades básicas reconocidas en favor de las y los mexicanos, además de afectar los gobernados en el diseño, equilibrio y facultades establecidas constitucionalmente entre la Federación y los estados, las instituciones, órganos del Estado y Poderes.

Council of Europe presents action plan on protecting refugee and migrant children
The mass arrivals in Europe of people fleeing from danger in their countries put children in a very vulnerable situation. They are exposed to the risk of physical violence, sexual abuse and psychological suffering in addition to material hardship. Whether they are refugees or migrants, children are at the centre of all Council of Europe actions involving migratory issues.

Ombudsman investigation recommends improvements in HSE’s Treatment Abroad Scheme
Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has today published a report following his investigation into the HSE’s administration of the Treatment Abroad Scheme. The investigation followed complaints to the Ombudsman about the scheme including suggestions that it was overly complex, that there were delays in approving applications and that some applicants were being given incorrect information.

The Commission participated in the first Regional Conference for Ombudsmen of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states in Djibouti City, Djibouti, from 10th to 11thDecember, 2017. The Conference, whose theme was ‘Migration, Public Protection and Human Security’, was organised by IGAD for experience sharing and development of a regional approach to addressing the challenges related to migration, public protection and human security in the IGAD region.

2021 Annual Report of the CCAC of Macao published in Official Gazette
The 2021 Annual Report of the Commission Against Corruption of Macao was published in the Official Gazette of the Macao Special Administrative Region on the 3rd of August.
