Venice Principles on Ombudsman institutions now also available in Italian
On 15 March 2019, the “Principles on the Protection and Promotion of the Ombudsman Institution”, (“The Venice Principles”) were adopted by the Venice Commission. A translation of the text into Italian has been made available by the Office of the Ombudsman of the Autonomous Province of Trento a (Italy).

Ombudsman hosts 2nd Istanbul International Ombudsman Conference
The Ombudsman Institution of Turkey was pleased to have successfully hosted the “2nd Istanbul International Ombudsman Conference”, which took place from 18 – 19 November 2019 in Istanbul, Turkey, which brought together around 150 participants from 57 countries of different continents, representing various national and international Ombudsman institutions as well as Human Rights Commissions.

AOMA condemns xenophobic violence against migrant African-owned businesses in South Africa
The African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA) expresses its concern over the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, where widespread looting and torching of foreign-owned African shops have been reported in Johannesburg and in Pretoria a few days earlier. AOMA urges the use of diplomatic channels by African governments in finding a workable solution for all citizens of Africa affected by the violence.

Council of Europe publishes Antirumours Handbook
This handbook is a practice-oriented sequel of the “Cities Free of Rumours” Guide published in 2015 by the Council of Europe. The lessons learned in recent years coupled with the growth in the number of cities that have joined the ARS and the interest it has generated since then, call for an update and further systematization of the antirumours approach and methodology. The handbook also provides practical examples to help and inspire cities and other stakeholders interested in learning more about this initiative and how to put it into practice.

Unintended consequences for prisoners as Northland continues with old regime
The Chief Ombudsman of New Zealand Peter Boshier says the Northland Regional Corrections Facility is persisting with policies that are preventing it from achieving its full potential. Mr Boshier has tabled his latest report in Parliament on an unannounced inspection of the Prison conducted in February.

Ontario Ombudsman launches nationwide search for French Language Services Commissioner
Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé announced the details of his plans to fill the role of French Language Services Commissioner within his office. Mr Dubé will choose the new commissioner with the assistance of an expert panel: Michel A. Carrier (Interim Commissioner of Official Languages for New Brunswick), and Linda Cardinal(University of Ottawa professor and internationally recognized authority on language rights).

On the occasion of the June 1-International Day for Protection of Children the Azerbaijani Ombudsman held a series of events and met with children in the Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Down syndrome within the Human Rights Month and expressed her best wishes to them.

Informal dialogue with Indonesian Ombudsman to establish ASEAN Ombudsman Forum
On 11 March 2019 the Thai Ombudsman, the Ombudsman of the Republik of Indonesia, and the Public Complaints Bureau of Malaysia, participated in an informal dialogue on the establishment of the ASEAN Ombudsman Forum (AOF), an initiative proposed by the Thai Ombudsman to bring together Ombudsman colleagues in member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

El 5 de febrero de 2025 se ha celebrado el acto de firma del Acuerdo de las defensorías sobre la cultura de la justicia restaurativa, el diálogo, la conciliación, el acuerdo y la reparación, que busca impulsar las medidas alternativas de resolución de conflictos en las quejas que llegan a estas instituciones de defensa de derechos. El Acuerdo, impulsado por la síndica de greuges, también ha sido firmado por el defensor del pueblo andaluz; el ararteko (País Vasco); la diputada del Común (Canarias) y la arartekoa (Navarra).
