    Paris Principles at 25: Strong National Human Rights Institutions needed more than ever

    On 18th December the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe published a comment on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Paris Principles highlightening the important contribution of NHRIs, especially in the current context of retrogression on human rights. The comment also raises concern about attacks on the independence and efficiency of NHRIs, and articulates a number of recommendations.

    Ombudsman Hong Kong published Brief Report 2018

    The Ombudsman of Hong Kong, Ms Connie Lau, published the Office of The Ombudsman’s Brief Report 2018 on 31 January.   The Office received a total of 10,130 enquiries and 4,870 complaints in 2018. The figures were at similar levels to those in the past few years, with an average of 850 enquiries and 400 complaints per month.

    Children’s Advocate appointed

    The Ombudsman of Namibia announced the appointment of Ms Ingrid Husselmann as the Deputy Chief, effective 1 November 2018. As the Deputy Chief, Ms Husselmann will lead and oversee the operational management of the Division: Human Rights and Legal services. She will also serve as the Children’s Advocate in the Office of the Ombudsman.

    Ombudsman welcomes scheme for clients who lost adoption fees

    Irish Ombudsman and IOI President, Peter Tyndall, has welcomed the Irish government’s decision to establish a scheme to repay clients who lost money following the closure of an adoption agency in 2015. The scheme is being set up following extensive discussions between the Irish Ombudsman, the Adoption Authority of Ireland, and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs.

    According to Deputy-Ombudsman Pasi Pölönen, more precise regulation is required concerning smoking bans in prisons. Any lack of clarity in regulations should be urgently rectified because the health of personnel working in prisons and of prisoners who do not smoke must be safeguarded.

    Sha Abdul Latif University pays service dues on orders of Ombudsman Sindh

    A retired government employee approached the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh, Mr. Asad Ashraf Malik with the complaint that Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur did not pay her outstanding pension and commutation dues and was delaying the matter on one pretext or the other. Ombudsman Sindh, Mr. Asad Ashraf Malik, issued directives to the authorities concerned to initiate enquiry in the matter.
