Human Rights Defender publishes report on rights of persons with mental health issues in psychiatric institutions
The Human Rights Defender as National Preventive Mechanism has prepared and published an ad hoc report on “Ensuring rights of persons with mental health issues in psychiatric institutions”. The report presents in a systemized way the gross violations identified during the unannounced visits to psychiatric institutions conducted by the NPM subdivision and experts (lawyers, psychologist, psychiatrist, physicians and sociologist) in 2017.

Investigation into the detention conditions of inmates serving intermittent sentences in Québec
In a special report released on March 21, 2018, the Québec Ombudsman spoke out against the detention conditions of people serving intermittent sentences in Québec correctional facilities. The increase in intermittent sentences has exacerbated the problem of overcrowding in many facilities, especially on Saturdays and Sundays.

La Defensora de Niñas, Niños y Adolescentes de la provincia de Santa Fe, Analía Colombo, fue designada como coordinadora general de la Red de Niñez y Adolescencia de la Federación Iberoamericana del Ombudsman. El nombramiento fue realizado el pasado 14 de marzo en el marco de la XII Sesión de la Red de Niñez y Adolescencia de la Federación Iberoamericana del Ombudsman en la ciudad de Panamá.

Hace tiempo que la institución del Síndic recibe quejas de familias monoparentales por la demora en las tramitaciones de las solicitudes de alta o de renovación de los títulos de familia monoparental. Para resolver este procedimiento, el Departamento de Derechos Sociales dispone de seis meses.

International conference on the problem of air pollution caused by domestic heating
On February 27, 2018, the Ombudsman for Future Generations, together with the Hungarian Clean Air Action Group, in partnership with the German Umwelthilfe and the Danish Ecological Council organized an international conference on the problem of air pollution caused by domestic heating. Nearly 80 experts attended this event, representing the competent ministries, environmental authorities and non-governmental organizations.

Informe del Ararteko al Parlamento Vasco 2017
A lo largo de 2017 se han atendido un total de 13.437 actuaciones, (incremento de la actividad del Ararteko en esta anualidad de un 22%) de las cuales 9.545 corresponden a quejas y consultas y 37 a expedientes de oficio. Se han realizado un total de 10.168 servicios en las oficinas de atención directa: 3.600 han sido a través del servicio telefónico y 6.568 las personas que han acudido a alguna de las tres oficinas, demandando información y asesoramiento.

Austrian Ombudsman supports Japanese research project
On 20 March 2018 Ombudsman Kräuter welcomed Mr Mahito Shindo, Assistant Professor at the School of Sciences of Waseda University, Tokyo. In a current research project Mr Shindo examines to what extent Ombudsman institutions can ensure the quality of administrative environmental decision makings. The Austrian Ombudsman Board was pleased to contribute its expertise to this academic work.

The protection of military personnel’s rights should be under special attention
On 14 March 2018, a session of the Expert Council on Military Personnel Rights adjunct to the Human Rights Defender (HDR) was held. HRD staff members and NGOs field academia experts participated in the meeting, which was chaired by Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan.
