    Ombudsman Bermuda hosted International Ombudsman Conference

    The 10th Biennial Caribbean Ombudsman Association (CAROA) Conference concluded on Wednesday at the Fairmont Southampton Resort in Bermuda. The Ombudsman for Bermuda, Victoria Pearman, and her colleagues from the region will be in training sessions with Dr. Victor Ayeni for the remainder of the week.

    IOI History

    In order to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its foundation in 1978, the IOI decided to embark on a publication project and commissioned Professor Richard Carver, Senior Lecturer in Human Rights and Governance at Oxford Brooks University, with the task of writing a “History of the IOI”. Print copies of Richard Carver's book on “A Mission to Justice – The International Ombudsman Institute 1978-2018” can be purchased from the IOI.

It highlights what supported decision-making entails in theory and in practice, as well as outlining developments in Europe and the role of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in ensuring compliance with international standards.

    El Mecanismo Catalán para la Prevención de la Tortura solicita alternativas a la prisión para las personas con discapacidad intelectual

    En 2024 el Síndic de Greuges ha visitado 35 equipamientos con personas privadas de libertad. El informe de 2024 incluye un monográfico sobre la atención a los internos con discapacidad intelectual en las prisiones, que constata la falta de recursos especializados para atender sus necesidades. La institución pide que se revise la Circular 2/2024 porque contiene restricciones en el acceso al trabajo penitenciario que pueden limitar el objetivo de reinserción de las personas privadas de libertad.

    IOE 2019 – Special event on women leaders in Ombudsman and oversight institutions

    For the first-time ever, the International Ombud Expo 2019 scheduled to hold in Sheraton Abuja, Nigeria from 28 – 31 October, 2019 will include a special event dedicated to showcase through pictures, sharing of experiences, and expert discussions the contributions of women leaders in these institutions. Women have contributed immensely towards the development and impact of ombudsman and related oversight institutions across the globe. But this influence has remained largely unnoticed.  More so, there is no systematic data available anywhere on this.  The special event is aimed at closing this gap

    NPM visited 21 places of detention until August

    From the beginning of this year until mid-August, the National Prevention Mechanism (NPM) of Portugal has carried out 21 monitoring visits to places of deprivation of liberty. Of the 21 visits made, 13 went to prisons, four to Temporary Settlement Centers and Matched Spaces (EECIT), two to Educational Centers and two to places of detention by the police.

    10th Biennial Caribbean Ombudsman Association Conference and Training

    The 10th Biennial Caribbean Ombudsman Association Conference and Training will be held in Bermuda from 28th – 31st May.  The theme for the conference is “Strengthening the Role and Performance of the Ombudsman and Human Rights Institutions in the Caribbean and Latin America”. The training will be facilitated by Dr. Victor Ayeni and the theme will be “Advancing the Ombudsman’s Impact: Roles, Services and Performance”.

    Peer Review Seminar to be hosted in London

    The UK Parliamentary Ombudsman will be hosting a seminar on Peer Review in London in conjunction with the IOI on Monday, 23 September 2019.  This follows on from the review of his Office which IOI President, Peter Tyndall led in conjunction with the late Caroline Mitchell of the UK Financial Ombudsman and Christian Gill, Lecturer in Public Law at University of Glasgow.

    Ombuds Day – 10 October 2019

    This year marks the second annual celebration of a highly impactful profession that has been around for centuries, but still remains unknown. On 10 October 2019, the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Dispute Resolution Section Ombuds Committee invites you to the celebration of the ombudsman profession. Ombuds Day is inclusive of all types of ombuds and will occur on the second Thursday of October each year.

    The Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman, Jørgen Steen Sørensen, has just published the institution´s Annual Report 2018 and as every year the Ombudsman has given many talks on the institution´s work. The talks usually give rise to discussions and questions, mostly about cases the Ombudsman has investigated. But also many questions on what it is really like to be Ombudsman.

    Ombudsman publishes Annual Report 2018

    In 2018, the Ombudsman's Office received a total of 48,129 requests through the various channels available to citizens, including 36,111 entries of complaints and other communications. During the year, 9338 new procedures were instituted, five of them from the Ombudsman's initiative, which translates into an increase in the handling of complaints of 20% over the previous year.

    ENNHRI submits third-party intervention to European Court of Human Rights on right to vote for persons with disabilities

    ENNHRI has submitted a third-party intervention to the European Court of Human Rights in the cases of Strøbye v. Denmark and Rosenlind v. Denmark concerning the right to vote for individuals who are under legal guardianship or deprived of their legal capacity. Led by the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) of Denmark (Danish Institute for Human Rights), the submission underlines that voting rights cannot be withdrawn solely based on a disability.
