In order to identify best practices on protection services for unaccompanied minors in Europe, the Ombudsman for the Basque Country needs the support and cooperation of other European Ombudsman institutions. The Basque Ombudsman has prepared a questionnaire which can be answered in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish. The Basque Ombudsman kindly asks the European Ombudsman institutions to answer this questionnaire by 8 November 2019.

2019-10-02Control Yuan conducts investigation on homecare workers forced to donate part of their pay
In August 2017, a group of 18 homecare workers hired by the privately-run Ching-Kuan Social Welfare Charity Foundation accused the foundation of unlawfully forcing them to return part of their pay. The foundation was commissioned by Tainan City Government to provide home care services during the period from 2013 to 2015. To safeguard the rights of these workers, the Control Yuan (CY) of Taiwan launched an investigation into the case.

2019-10-02Baltic-Nordic Ombudsman conference in Vilnius draws attention to importance of economic and social rights
On 26 September 2019, a Baltic-Nordic ombudsman conference "Ensuring social and economic rights is a safeguard of a dignified life" took place at the National Library of Lithuania. At the opening of the conference, the Head of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office of Lithuania greeted the ombudsmen from the Baltic and Nordic countries, the Chairman of the Committee on Human Rights of Lithuanian Parliament and welcomed the fact that conference discussions on protection and improvement of human rights and freedoms can be held in the Baltic-Nordic framework.

2019-10-01New Comissioner for Fundamental Rights takes office
Commissioner for Fundamental Rights of Hungary Ákos Kozma – who took office this Thursday – would like to work particularly on solving the problems of people turning to the Ombudsman and protecting the rights of children and vulnerable groups. In his interview given to the Hungarian News Agency he also emphasized that he wishes to preserve the independent and non-political nature of the ombudsman institution.

Due to recent media reports of alleged tortuture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment meted out to two journalists, CHRAJ found it appropriate to issue an Advisory in accordance with the Paris Principles which vest National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) with general responsibility to advise Government, Parliament and other authorities by giving and issuing “opinions, recommendations, proposals and reports”.
